The first thing Laila Rose Kumar thought as she entered Kings Cross Station was that she couldn't wait to get onto the train. The second was that she was really hungry.
She hadn't had a chance to eat much that morning. While she usually had trouble sleeping, the night prior had been particularly insufferable, and it wasn't like Ginny's questions till late helped either. She had snuck out of the room last night for a walk to tire herself out, only to be caught by Mrs. Weasley, and get sent straight back to bed.
"Your father trusted us to make sure you were ready for Hogwarts, and I will not have you fainting on your first day," she had scolded. Of course, the woman meant well. She knew just as well as Laila's father the nature of her condition, and what it meant for her health, but still, it ticked Laila off sometimes. The adults never treated her the same way they treated other children; she was kept like china in a case, while other children were allowed to go out and do what they want.
Again, she knew all they wanted was to protect her. Didn't make it any less frustrating, though. And honestly, if her father cared that much about her having the perfect send off, the least he could have done was shown up. Instead, he dropped her off at the Weasley burrow two days prior with all her supplies, and then he was off to work. Said he had an important case.
He didn't even let her get an owl.
"Excuse me," said a boy she didn't recognize, snapping Laila out of her thoughts.
She took in the boys appearance. He was small and skinny, wearing clothes that were entirely too big for him. He sported a pair of round, thin framed glasses, held together at the bridge of his nose with tape. He had a thin face, with dark hair and dazzling green eyes.
"Hello, dear," Mrs. Weasley said. "First time at Hogwarts? Ron's new, too. So is Laila, here." The plump woman gestured to the two. Laila gave a small greeting to the boy and waved, while Ron elected to awkwardly smile.
"Yes," said the dark haired boy. "The thing is—the thing is, I don't know how to—"
"Get onto the platform?" Mrs. Weasley finished kindly, and the boy nodded.
"Not to worry," she said. "All you have to do is walk straight at the barrier between platforms nine and ten. Don't stop and don't be scared you'll crash into it, that's very important. Best do it at a bit of a run if you're nervous. Go on, Laila, show him."
"Me?" she asked incredulously. "But I've never—"
"Nonsense, you'll do great." Mrs. Weasley assured.
The ravenettw sighed. She turned to Ginny and brought her into a hug. "Wish me luck."
"You'll be fine," she said, before turning to look to her mother. "Mum, are you sure I can't go?"
"Ginny, we've been over this. You're far too young."
