Chapter Twenty Eight: Maya
I run away from Caleb, my love, because I've just seen a vision of Talia and Liam dying simultaneously. I know that it will happen in ten minutes, which is just enough time for me to get there and stop it. I take off into the air and fly faster than a jet plane. I land smoothly, just in time to see a few still living soldiers sneak up behind Liam and Talia. I scream out, and then I run up to them with a knife. Caleb has his sword back, so I must make do with this small knife. I stab three in the heart, and then cut off the heads of the other two. Liam and Talia watch with fear and fascination, and I smile weakly at them before going to help my next group. Before I see, I already know it's too late to save my ex best friend. Ayla lies on the ground in a pool of her own blood, and Selene cries next to her. I take off my jacket and lay it over Ayla's chest, then I close her eyes. I help Selene up and take her to the healing tent. She is fixed up while I wait, and then I tell her where we need to be.
"Caleb needs us!" I say, which brings her back to reality. She flies with me to where I last saw Caleb, and we land. She tries to run up to him, but stops at an invisible barrier. This is only a one on one fight, and cannot be interrupted. However, I wonder... I watch as Caleb is struck down and stumbles backwards, hitting the ground. I push past Selene and run into the midst of the fight, taking Caleb's sword into my own hands.
"Get out of here!" I growl at him, but all he does is stand again. I stand and face Ian, but suddenly there's a cut in my shoulder, then on my face. I feel blood dripping down, but I stay standing. I concentrate on Ian with everything I have, and I engage in a proper fight. I manage to knock Ian back, and yet my reward is a deep cut in my thigh. I drop Caleb's sword as a reflex, my hands moving to my leg. Caleb stands, and he looks at the complete daylight that is around us now.
"There's just over an hour," Ian says, and Caleb continues to fight him with renewed vigour. I stand and lend my energy to Caleb, encouraging him. When he is too weary to continue, I take up my knife and run up to Ian. I manage to draw him in close, and he lodges his sword firmly in my stomach. I gasp in pain, but I push my knife as hard as I can into his chest. I move it around, cutting his heart into pieces, and he goes limp, his mouth in a tiny 'o' shape. I let go of him, then pull the blade out of my stomach. I walk wearily to Caleb, and he holds me tightly, then suddenly we're in the healing tent. I press my lips onto his, and whisper three words.
"I love you." Then the world fades into darkness, and all warmth disappears. I'm surrounded by coldness, and I see a figure standing before me.
"Who are you?" I ask.
"I am death, but I cannot reach you. I would love to guide you back to your ancestor Michael, but there is one on Earth who can command me, and he tries to stop me from reaching you." I think. I don't remember anything from my life, except a sword going into my stomach, and then this. Suddenly, I feel ice pressing on my skin, and death claims me, holding me tight. Whoever has tried to save me has failed. My life is over, and finally I can meet my ancestor Michael. I close my eyes in content, ready to be taken to my death.
