[A/N: I haven't written a story in some serious years, and due to a little motivation from a good friend of mine, I've come back with an original story rather than a fanfiction. I'll do my best to build this world and these charcters, let me know how I'm doing! Also the MC's name is pronounced "Kai-row"]
"I can't stay like this." Kairo said quietly to himself, a sigh of frustration escaping him as he stares out a nearby window, heavy rain and wind whipping away at the freshly manicured garden outside.
"...Hey, are you even listening, man?" A compassionate male voice calls from behind Kairo, suddenly dragging him out of his reverie. He turns around with a courteous smile towards one of his closest friends, Riley, his partner in crime since second grade. The fair-skinned green eyed man, freshly turned 20 offers a gentle smile and hand out to Kairo.
"Whatever you're going through, remember that you are never alone man, I've been with you through it all, from your darkest days to your happiest celebrations- you and me were always together. Remember when we both teamed up against your bully back in Elementary school? Or when we both became the greatest wingman ever for each other during senior prom?"
Riley slides a small stool in front of Kairo and looks him in the eyes, ignoring the fact that his hand was ignored.
"It was you and me throughout it all, Kairo- so don't be afraid to let me know what's up now."
With a short sigh and a dismissive wave of the hand, Kairo looks riley in the eyes for a moment before looking away and shaking his head.
"Yeah man, I know." Kairo spoke through a deep sigh "It's just that this time it's different. At the end of the day, all that time before, you and I both knew that at the end of the night, we knew exactly where we would be- In the relative safety and comfort of our own homes, preparing for the next adventure. But that's not the case now and you know it!" He said through a hushed half-yell.
"Oh really? How so?" Riley asked with a slight head nod, those powerful emerald eyes piercing straight through Kairo's, stripping away all of the mental barriers he puts up to keep others from prying too deeply into his life. Riley had a true gift for that type of thing, something about his calm yet firm demeanor, vibrant green eyes, and the way his curly blonde locks flowed would force the truth out of anyone, or make even the sternist of people let him off easy with simple eye contact, like one time in high school, the two attended a party and the police showed up to shut it down and started calling parents, Riley somehow got the old, gruff officer to let them both off with a promise to never be caught out after curfew again. They spent plenty of time out beyond curfew after that, of course. They were just never caught.
"Oh my God, FINE- you win, I'll tell you- just stop it with the weird truth spell magic eye contact." Kairo relents before he slumps back into the wide armchair he was in. "I just... I feel like such a burden and a failure, man. That's basically it. Let's be real, I'm half a year from my 21st birthday and I have practically nothing to show for myself since I graduated highschool! And now here I am, freeloding in my best friends house because I couldn't get my life together, I don't even compare to you- You have always been the golden child, everyone loves you from the moment that they meet you- You're freshly 20 and already have a higher paying career than over half of the people we've met in our entire lives, you've got scholarships up the ass to transfer out to any big name University you want, you've even been named in the town paper as a prodigy! Don't get me wrong, I am extremely happy for you and wouldn't want you to lose any of it but let's be realistic- I don't belong here!" Kairo dragged his hands down his face, letting out another sigh of frustration. "I'm just a burden on your family, let's be honest." Kairo looks to Riley with a sorrowful smile across his face.
