Y/N POV
I am going insane.
That's the only explanation for what just happened because haunted houses are not real.
There must have been an electrical glitch with the wiring in the cable box, Righ?.
Maybe someone hacked the box to change the channels on unsuspecting customers as a joke.
That must be it, that explanation makes way more sense.
Although I find it interesting that once I changed the channel, there were no more issues with it flipping on its own.
Stretching after unpacking most of the boxes and finding the household items necessary to get through the night, I order myself a large pizza from a local place and play on my computer while I wait for its arrival.
Video games help me to relax and take my mind off the world around me.
I am partial to city builders and time management games.
With a few days of my vacation remaining, I resist checking my emails to see if any of my clients need me.
After what seems like no time at all, the doorbell rings causing Chewie to shoot up, running out of the office towards the front door while barking his little fluffy head off.
I follow close behind him, blocking him from jumping out of the house with my foot I open the door.
"I'm surprised someone bought this place." The kid delivering the pizza says handing me a slip to sign in a black book when I step out, closing the door behind me to keep the dog inside.
The kid wears the leather jacket of the local high school and looked like he is no older than seventeen.
Assuming this is an after-school job for him.
I wonder when high-schoolers started to look like kids to me. UGH!, I must be getting old.
"What do you mean?" I ask him.
"I live down the street," he says, pointing over his shoulder to a house I have trouble making out through the thick tree line in the dark.
It must be the one with the blue siding off the main road.
I passed it on my way to the house earlier in the day. "And we've seen all the people who live here come and go. Sometimes, when we walk past here with our dogs, people standing in the window, but we know that no one lives here."
"Maybe it was squatters? This would be a great house for someone to live in if they couldn't find anywhere else to go, especially in the winter." I say.
"Nah," he snorted. "There was a guy once, but he only lasted one night before he ran out of the house screaming. My parents called the cops, but they couldn't find him. Anyway, my parents told me when they were teenagers there used to be a house where they would film horror movies in until it burned down. They had all sorts of creepy stories about shit that would happen. Some guy even died here when he fell down the stairs." The teenage boy animately tells me.
"Wait," I respond, narrowing my eyes in confusion, "No one told me someone died here."
The kid shrugs taking the signature book back from me and handing me the pizza box. "I gotta get to my next delivery, but if you need anything, come over to our house. My parents have no life."
"Thanks," I mumble as I push Chewie back from the door to get inside.
Walking over to the couch, I throw the pizza box on the coffee table and sit, sinking into the welcoming cushions.
After several attempts, Chewie jumps onto the couch and lays next to me, placing his head on my leg and looking at me with large doe-like eyes.
"Sorry buddy, pizza isn't good for dogs," I say rubbing the top of his head and scratching behind his ears.
He snort and moved his gaze to a spot on the couch past me with the same look.
Like he is begging the air with the same concentration he used on me.
His stare is unwavering, and I look at the place he is so intent looking at.
"You know, it's really creepy when you stare like that," I told him, squinting my eyes before looking away.
Opening the pizza box, I reach for a slice.
Getting the remote to the TV, I turn it on and out one of my favorite movies.
I try really hard to ignore the chill running down my spine, as if someone, or something, watching me.
I feel like I am under a microscope.
All I can think is the words that delivery guy just said, shit.
