Paper Rings

I like shiny things, but I'd marry you with paper rings

Uh huh, that's right

Darling, you're the one I want, and

I hate accidents except when we went from friends to this

Uh huh, that's right

Darling, you're the one I want

The song "Paper Rings" by Taylor Swift played softly from Nick's phone while he sat on his bed, laptop opened in front of him, and multiple crumpled pieces of paper spread out around him.

Nick would never admit this to anyone but Charlie but he loved Taylor Swift. He loved all her songs but he'd been listening to this one in particular on repeat for the past hour.

He groaned and ran his hands through his hair. He'd been trying to make a paper promise ring for Charlie for the past hour but his hands were definitely not built for origami.

I want to drive away with you

I want your complications too

I want your dreary Mondays

Wrap your arms around me, baby boy

The song reminds him of him and Charlie. Of how they were friends before they started dating, how Charlie had liked Nick ever since they started talking, how Nick had probably liked Charlie the whole time too. God Nick was so in love. They'd been together for 2 years now. Nick would do anything for his boyfriend. He wanted to show Charlie that he would always be there for him. For the good days and the bad ones. Always. So he was making Charlie a promise ring. Well he was trying to at least. Trying and falling.

There was a knock on the door. Shit. Charlie. Nick forgot he was coming. He attempted to gather up all the papers and slammed his computer closed just as Charlie walked in.

Charlie was wearing one of Nick's football t-shirts he must have stolen, a green and red flannel, and a pair of ripped black jeans.

Charlie looked at him, confusion and worry on his face. "Nick? What's up? Are you ok?"

"Yeah. Yeah I'm fine sorry"

Charlie sat next to him, wrapping an arm around his shoulders and leaning his head on Nick's shoulders. "No sorries, remember?" He smiled up at Nick. That genuine, loving smile that made Nick's stomach do somersaults every time he was on the receiving end of it. How was it that they'd been dating for 2 years and Charlie still managed to do this to Nick. "Come on, what's up?"

The moon is high

Like your friends were the night that we first met

Went home and tried to stalk you on the internet

Now I've read all of the books beside your bed

The song started replaying from Nick's phone. He sighed and opened his laptop, showing Charlie the instructions on how to make a paper ring.

"I was trying to make this but, well it wasn't going very well."

Charlie smiled again, sitting up and picking up one of the unfolded sheets of paper from Nick's bed. "I can help you!"

"Really? You don't have to it was kind of stupid anyway..."

"Nick shut up," Charlie cut him off from his rambling. "I love origami and I'm probably better at it than you," he teased. "Of course I'll help you. And it's not stupid."

"Ok," Nick smiled. He was sad that the surprise was ruined but if he got to make it with Charlie, honestly, that was better.

Charlie showed him, step by step, how to make the paper ring, occasionally guiding Nick's hands with his own on particularly hard parts. Charlie would roll his eyes whenever he caught Nick staring at him with adoration which was about every 5 minutes.

Kiss me once 'cause you know I had a long night

(Oh!) Kiss me twice 'cause it's gonna be alright

Three times 'cause I've waited my whole life

(One, two, one two three four!)

The song continued to play softly from Nick's phone but neither boy made a move to turn it off. Nick couldn't believe his luck. He got to sit here with the love of his life, listening to a Taylor Swift song that almost perfectly summarized their relationship, and make a paper ring with him. He wouldn't trade it for the world.

After about half an hour later a singular paper ring was created. It was wonky and misshapen but it was theirs. And to Nick and Charlie, that was all that really mattered.

Nick smiled and set it on his bedside table along with all the crumpled papers and his laptop. He turned back around and looked at Charlie, taking in his dark curls that fell over his forehead and his dimples that showed whenever he smiled. At some point while he was here Charlie had abandoned his flannel in favor of one of Nick's hoodies. He drowned in the fabric and Nick smiled. As much as he pretended to be annoyed whenever Charlie stole one of his hoodies, it really was quite endearing.

Nick took Charlie's face in his hands and leaned his forehead against his boyfriends.

"I love you," he whispered.

Charlie laughed, flustered. "I love you too you idiot," he responded, his face turning red.

Nick closed the distance between them and kissed him, running his hands through Charlie's dark curls.

They ended up just laying on Nick's bed and talking and listening to music until Charlie had to leave at 9. Nick started at the lumpy paper ring on his bedside table. It wasn't perfect but they made it together. So he'd give that one to Charlie. He just needed to find the perfect time.

The following weekend Nick found himself sitting at a picnic bench outside the milkshake cafe. He was wearing a jumper Charlie had just given back to him and it smelled like Charlie, like freshly cut grass and flowers. It was nice. He'd never tell Charlie that.

Charlie sat down next to him. He was wearing another one of Nick's jumpers that Nick didn't remember giving to him. The sleeves were pulled over his hands and he was sporting that signature Charlie Spring smile.

"Hey," Nick said as Charlie sat down, smiling up at him.

"Hi."

Nick intertwined their fingers between them. "Do you want to share a milkshake?"

"As long as it's not bubblegum."

Nick rolled his eyes. "Chocolate then?"

They shared the milkshake and then ended up walking around the park for a little while, holding hands the entire time.

Nick stopped and dropped Charlie's hand, nervously fiddling with the sleeves of his jumper.

Charlie's head tilted slightly to the side. "Are you ok?"

"Yeah yeah sorry," Nick said. "I just...well..." He pulled the slightly deformed paper ring out of his pocket. "Do you remember making this? Well I was originally making it cause...well...it's kind of like a promise ring? Just to show that I'll always be here for you. No matter what. Sorry it's stupid..."

Charlie took Nick's face in his hands and kissed him softly, smiling. "Nick. You're a dork, you know that? I love you so much."

Nick smiled. "So you like it then?"

Charlie shoved him playfully with his shoulder. "Of course I do."

"Well uh here then," he gave the ring to Charlie before pulling him into a hug. Charlie laughed and Nick thought he could listen to Charlie's laugh forever. "I love you Char," he whispers into his hair.

"I love you too"
