'Miss Lawrence will definitely notice me if I ace the science exam. I must find a way to cheat!' thought Nerd Lu, books clutched tightly to his chest and oversized glasses slipping down his pimply nose.
'I need to work harder on my speed, Sports is the only way I can get a scholarship, and a scholarship is the only way I can study Computer Sciences in Harvard.' thought Basketball Team Captain Jack as he walked down the hall looking cool; as cool people generally look. A cool person who wants to study computer science, apparently.
The three of us entered English at the same time. I just love English; our teacher, miss Nima, is my favorite teacher, and my greatest hobby is reading about conditionals (it's true) (I'm obviously not being forced to say this or anything). I paid close attention, as I always do in English, as we talked about the most interesting and most certainly not in the least bit overused topic ever: Not judging a book by its cover.
Lu read a passage. His words were all jumbled and too fast, and he was so overconfident he messed up his vowels. Miss Nima thought as much. The rest of the class however, did not.
'He's so fast; I bet he memorized it at home!'
'It's like a completely different language! He's that fluent!'
'He'll so raise the class average!'Then, Jack read a passage. His words were well articulated, and he only messed up one. He was slow, but only to give each word enough time to be said correctly. He had practiced at home.
'So slow.. This is boring.'
'He should stick to basketball, haha.'
'Better than expected at least.'
Nobody said anything to either of them aloud, but I couldn't help but wonder: Did everyone completely miss the point of the story?
