What She Sees

Alex knew that something had changed in her since the incident in the Caribbean. And it was not for more, because that had been without a doubt the most terrifying experience that she had ever lived, leaving all her previous slips with magic as just that, slips, small and insignificant slips that didn't hurt anyone. Or at least, that didn't harm anyone to the point an entire family was in danger of disappearing. And it is that she could not believe that her little whim of going to a party for a simple boy had caused so much chaos, so much damage, so much pain and so much sorrow with just a few words and a magic wand. She remembers all the terror and all the guilt she felt that night in the jungle when she pretended to go to sleep. She couldn't sleep, how could she even think about that if there was the possibility that at any moment she and her brothers would disappear forever, and all because of her? Justin had promised her that everything would be alright, that they would find a way to fix this, but she was afraid that they wouldn't and that not even the Stone of Dreams was a solution to the problem they had gotten into this time. Alex's blood ran cold just thinking about that possibility.

Alex remembers crawling away from Justin so he couldn't feel her shiver in the makeshift shack they'd made for the night, and she was not trembling from the cold, but from fear and the contained sobs that she refused to let go (She wasn't going to cry now, she wasn't going to cry unless she knew that all was truly lost). She knew that if he felt her shiver, he would wake up (if he was actually asleep) and he would ask her if everything was okay and would comfort her when she started crying (which she told herself she wouldn't, but she wasn't entirely sure if she could bear not to cry having him tell her this wasn't her fault as he comforted her) (because he was Justin, and of course he would tell her that even if he thought otherwise).

She doesn't remember when she finally fell asleep, but she does remember the dream she had: they were finally in front of the Stone of Dreams, after all that distressing journey they finally had it in front of them, shining in its splendor, promising them the solution to their problem; but then, as soon as they advanced, a feeling of heaviness and fear began to invade her and when she turned at her side she could see how Justin seemed to have trouble walking, like someone going against a strong current of wind, and when she least expected it he began to disappear, to disintegrate in the air like dust (at the time she didn't know that time took its toll in a whirlpool, but it didn't matter), leaving her alone, in the middle of nowhere. There was no longer the shining Stone of Dreams in front of her, nor her brother at her side, nor even the walls of the cave surrounding her. There was only her and an immense darkness.

"Justin!" She had screamed with all her might, but still the words seemed to refuse to come out of her mouth. "Justin!" —another failed attempt.

She tried to move, to flee, to look for him but her body felt way too heavy and her lips seemed to be sealed preventing her from screaming properly.

"¡Justin!"

She also remembers a bit of the moment she woke up after that nightmare. Two hands grabbed her shoulders and shook her slightly, and her first instinct was to give whoever was holding her a good shove. She tried to come to her senses, and thanks to the light of the moon that made its way through the trees of the jungle (is she in a jungle?) She realizes that the one who has woken her up is a boy with light skin, black hair, apparently strong arms and hands, perhaps a little older than her and...

"I forgot why I hated waking you up," he tells her softly, as if he's afraid of waking up anyone else around 'em (which is stupid, they are the only ones who are that place at the time), while rubbing the place where she realizes she hit him.

"Why did you wake me up?" She feigns morning grumpiness, but inwardly she's so glad her brother woke her up, she was so glad he was still here.

Then he tells her something she didn't expect, but that didn't surprised her.
