I open my eyes when the car yields to a stop. The windows are foggy and I can't see a thing. Mrs. Jolene is not in her front seat and I start to panic. I jump to the front seat and unlock all of the doors. The snow comes down hard.
The snow and ice make my nose red and both of my cheeks as well. I can barely see the trail in front of me. "Mrs.Jolene" I scream I hear nothing, I scream it again, and again I hear nothing but the wind carrying the snow.
I keep running and a figure appears out from behind the tree.I scream and she runs in her heels over to me. "Oh my gosh Addiline are you ok" she says with her soft brown eyes, "What on heavens earth are you doing out here, why did you get out of the car?" she asks worriedly. We quickly walk back to the car and strap in.
"Well, when I woke up the car was empty and I couldn't see through the windows. I didn't know where we or where you were and I was scared so I jumped out and tried to find you but I couldn't.....and, and I'm sorry" I say scared. She grabs my face in her cold bare hands, "Addiline you did what you thought you should, which was to go and look for me and that means a lot, so don't get to down on yourself" I smile but it quickly fades as she pulls herself into the drivers seat.
She starts the car and we pull out of the empty and frozen lot. I lean my head against the car window trying to think about what these "parents" will be like. I raise my head up to a thought. "How long will it be?" I say "Just a couple more minutes, hopefully".
*I grab my suitcase out of the back of her trunk. I take a good look at the house,....ordinary. It was just a simple log cabin in which looked like every other one on the street, with lights hanging down from one end to the other and artificial snowy grass surrounding the garden.
We walk up the steps, Mrs. Jolene struggles a little bit with her high heels, but she manages. We give a little knock and wait for the wooden doors to open up. "Now Addiline you listen hear" I stop her "I'm listening" "Ok, please try this time, they are very nice people and they were nice enough to take you in so please appreciate that thought when you feel the need to run" she says sternly. I look down at the ground and twist my feet "Addiline?" she says stamping her foot "Ok I'll try" I say annoyed.
The front door opens and a middle aged woman stands behind a protective screen. She is tall and blonde. Her eyes are the perfect shade of hazel and she is skinny and fit. "Can I help you?" she says "Why yes, my name is Jolene Addams and I am from the Child Protection Agency and earlier this week you called me and asked for Addiline Smalls to be taken into your care" the woman looks down and looks back at me "Oh my...Come in, come in, we have been waiting for you all day" she says happily.
We walk into the log house. Inside is like a dream come true, There was leather couches, laminate floors, glass tables and a big flight of stairs that swirled up to the 2nd floor.
"It must be awfully cold out there, especially with the incoming blizzard" she says "Oh yes,it was very hard to get around" they both shake hands and introduce themselves. "My name is Kera and my husband is Russell but he isn't here as of right now" she says, she looks at me staring me up and down. "This I take it must be Addiline" she says still looking at me "Oh why yes, Addiline why don't you say hello". I give her a look and then look back at Keira or Kera or whatever her name was, I pull out my cold hand and shake her warm one "Hi, I'm Addiline" She grabs my hand into both of hers "Well it is wonderful to meet you my dear, I hope you like it here" she says. I give her a faint smile and quickly turn my head.
Mrs. Jolene grabs my shoulders and whispers a goodbye into my ear. "Ok you have my number if you need anything specific for her or if you have any questions, oh and one more thing she is very quiet, so if at first she doesn't talk to you don't take it too seriously it's just a phase" Mrs. Jolene shakes her hand and kisses my forehead and exits through the wooden door.
I look around the house taking it all in. Its bigger than I am used to, but I guess that I can get used to it.
"Ok, Mrs. Addiline, let me show you to your room" she says grabbing my stuff out of my hands. I follow her up the stairs and follow her down a narrow hallway. She opens a door that leads into a big and bright room. The walls were painted beige and the bed was king sized. It had a desk mirror in the corner and a dresser in the back. "Thank you" I say smiling to her "No problem, I'll just let you get situated and then you can come down for a snack or something like that" she says closing the oversized door.
I throw my suitcase down on the floor and walk to the bed. I place my hand on the surface of the sheets, silk and fleece. I pull it up to my face and feel the warmth spread throughout my cheeks . It was so so wrong but it felt so right, being in an oversized room, in an oversized house for what? It was so confusing to me that I felt happy even though I really wasn't and I don't think I will ever be.
