I was only 16 when it happened.
I was over at a friend's house playing Call of Duty when I got the phone call. I paused the game and stood up. My friend's hands went up in confusion so I pointed to the ringing phone. He sighed and pulled out his phone while I walked around the corner.I picked up, expecting to hear a "hello" in the least, but all I heard was sniffling and police sirens. "Hello? This is Lucas." No answer. Maybe it was just a wrong number. I was about to hit the end call button when I heard my mom's voice come through the speakers.
"Lucas... It's May...a..." She sobbed, her voice cracking.
"Oh my god what happened?" I asked, extremely worried for my little sister's health.
"Maya...she's... Just come... To the Northwood... Train station..." She sounded about ready to burst into tears. "I'd rather... Tell you in person..." I could hear the start of a meltdown as she hung up the phone. I walked back into the room with my friend in it. I told him something happened to Maya and I needed him to take me to the train station since he already had his driver's license. He agreed. The ride felt like forever, my mind contemplating the millions of things that could have happened. But none of it added up, why the train station? We turned the corner to find the station crowded with police vehicles and ambulances. He parallel parked the car and right as I opened the door and started towards the scene, I saw someone pushing a gurney with the familiar brown hair I knew as Maya's flowing out the side of the cover on her.
What was going on?!
I sprinted over to the crowd of people, searching desperately for my mother. After 5 minutes, I finally found her, her face covered in tears.
"Mom! What happened?!" I yelled over the voices of the fifty or so people in the crowd.
"Maya... The train..." She laughed hysterically, clearly not right in the head.
"Mom you can tell me later let's get you home..."
That was when she held out a shaky hand, palm downwards in a fist. "Maya..."
She held out another fist. "T-train"
She kept the "Maya" fist where it was out in front of her and started to move the other fist towards it. When they touched each other, she moved the "Maya" fist into a flat hand with a "Pshh" sound effect.
I didn't get it at first, then I thought about it more and more and tears began to roll down my face. She was gone.Maya was hit by a train and there was nothing I could do about it.
