I wake up with a jolt as a giant weight falls on to my stomach, knocking the wind out of me. My eyes focus to find a grinning Brandon sitting cross-legged on top of me. Rolling over onto my side, he slowly tips off the side of the bed with a thunk. Laughing, I sit up and look down the side of the bed to find him curled up laughing on the floor. He reaches up for my hand and I grab it, pulling him up onto the bed. We sit on the bed and laugh for a while.
"Are you nervous?" I ask, had we finally stopped our fit of laughing.
"A little" He replies tediously, obviously more than a little nervous. "How about you?"
"No" I say, blatantly lying. Of course I would be, it's my first day of college.
"Mmhmm" Brandon snickers, his signature, "I know all" grin played across his face. I roll my eyes and swing my legs over the side of the bed and get up, making a beeline to the coffee maker. I look through the rack of k-cups and decide on the hazelnut one as usual. I put it into the machine and get my morning coffee going, proceeding to finish my morning routine. I wait for Brandon to get out of the shower and we sit in silence for a moment, our first classes not starting for another hour.
"So, do you think you'll ever read Maya's diary?" Brandon asks, bringing the conversation to a whole new level of awkward. "Or do you think it's like an invasion of privacy." It was just a normal question, something Brandon might not even expect an answer from, an answer I wouldn't even know, so I sit there, pretending to think until he says something I didn't expect from him, since usually he'd just shut up.
"What if Maya's death wasn't an accident..." He says, looking down at his lap, legs folded as he sits on the bed.
"Everyone liked Maya... Why wouldn't they? She was nice, funny, sweet," I list off, stopping as my voice starts to break.
"But what if someone didn't... And what if it was written in that diary."
"I... She's gone now, it doesn't matter... There's nothing we can do." I say, my voice quivering.
"This is for your own good, and Maya's. We need to know." He says, walking over to the nightstand and picking up the diary, wiping off the cover, and opening it.-=+=-
June 5thHey, it's me. I guess I'm one of those girls that writes in a diary now huh... My grandma got me this for my birthday and I guess I'll admit, I kinda like it. Writing down my life story on paper. I can't wait to read this 20 years from now, laughing at how immature I was. Today was pretty fun though. For my birthday we went to the zoo and of course there was food involved so that kinda helped the fun factor up a bit. We had a nice dinner at a restaurant who's name I have no clue how to spell, then went home and just watched movies. Everyone fell asleep on the couch so there's not much else to do now, which kinda explains me actually using a diary... I should probably get to bed now considering it's Sunday and I have school tomorrow, I can't wait to see him again though...
Night,
Maya-=+=-
I sit in silence, in shock from hearing her words again. Brandon stares at his lap, knowing probably exactly how I feel. He knows not to say anything, although I wish he would, just something he would always say to get Maya's voice out of my head. He doesn't, so I do.
"It didn't say anything, told you..." I mumble, just for the sake of saying something.
"I don't mean to make you feel worse but I think it did..." He says, "The end... Who is he?"
"Probably just some crush..."
"Let's find out?" He says, reaching for the book.
"No. Let's just... Let's just go to class, okay? A new page every day, deal?" I say, knowing I can't handle more than that, no matter how much I want to know...
"Okay, one page a day." He says and we shake on it, heading out the door and to our classes, but I still was curious, whether I wanted to be or not,
Who was he?
