Danny led me to a passageway, the brick walls surrounding us menacingly as if warning me what danger lies ahead of me.
It felt as if there is a hot iron placed in my stomach whenever I'm around Danny. I can't tell if it's because I'm so caught up with the fact Adam cheated on me so openly or the fact that I'm following a man who I just met.
He opens the wooden door at the end of the hallway, it creaked slightly as it echoed in the corridor.
"In here darling," Danny called out, his burgundy jacket following him in.
In the corner, there is a sepia shelf with books and an assembly of odd glass objects. The wooden desk has parchment paper laying neatly. Candles and trinkets splattered all over the desk in array order.
"And this is my sanctuary!" He joyfully exclaimed almost in a childish manner. He throws off his claret jacket and grabbed a headpiece with different types of eyeglass shapes. It looks like what you would see at an ophthalmologist when getting a check-up.
I lower my gaze at his foolishness to see a green symbol. It had two triangles crossing each other with glowing green candles surrounding it in a ring.
"You can't be serious," I said looking back at him, the same grin placed on his annoying face.
"Oh I'm a hundred percent serious darling," he smugly replied and went back to his desk as if searching for something in his wide arrangement of objects.
"So your summoning something? You're an occultist basically?"
"I wouldn't call myself that, but if that's what helps you understand this situation better, go right ahead" he explained not glancing back with a gesturing hand. As he finally finds what he is finding he mumbled a little "ah-ha" before going back to fiddling with it.
"And what do I have anything to do with this?"
"You're my handywoman!" He turned back at me giving his biggest grin yet. "I need someone to help me with the little things to grab me stuff and do what I ask"
I look at him blankly then back at the green demon symbol lying on the ground.
"Are you sure your not gonna sacrifice me or something?"
He gave out a loud bellow of a laugh as if I'm joking. Danny calms down and looks at me again at my serious glare.
"No darling, Bella will be my victim." He clarified nonchalantly "I mean why would I sacrifice you? I just met you"
"I don't know that could be the exact intention of why you would! Because you don't know me!"
I think back to how he looked at her with such possessiveness when Adam seemed in love with her. Was Danny just jealous of Adam because he needed Bella's trust to do his sacrifice? If so, why Bella? Bella was the definition of perfect, how could anyone offer her to some weird demonic dimension?
He peeked back at me with a grave expression on his face. It is unrecognizable from his usual go-lucky happy attitude. I always noticed him flip back from careless and delighted to serious when he needed to be.
"I promise you Y/N, I'm not going to sacrifice you. I just need extra help, I'm almost done with this project and if I have a pair of hands on this I can hurry up with this." He faced me and insisted as he held my hand tightly just like before when he urged me to stay.
He stared at me hard forcing me to look back at his siren eyes. I tried not to alter my face in a flustering reaction for him. I finally took a glance into his gaze. There is begging in those siren eyes, it didn't suit him. It made me feel almost uncomfortable that such an expression could be positioned on a face like his.
"But what's the point of it all?" I exclaimed letting go of his hand harshly.
"Well isn't it obvious? Money? Love? Fame?" He laughed maniacally. "Whatever man truly desires am I right?"
It isn't the exact answer I'm looking for, it's too generic and universal. I groan in frustration.
Not like I have much of a choice. I'm stuck here.
"Okay fine what do you need help with?"
Just like that, I was handing him glasses of odd substances and objects. Sometimes there were odd under-the-sea trinkets you would find at a local tourist shop. There were a variety of grotesque sea objects like The Kraken or a hideous squid. Though, he asked me to hand him a deformed starfish.
"What are you even gonna do with these things?" I asked curiously as I handed him the toy starfish.
"You'll figure it out soon," he denotes taking the toy sea animal and touching the end joints of it playing with the star childishly. "It looks like Patrick star!"
I held back a chuckle and rolled my eyes. I opened my phone absent-mindedly to see an overload of notifications. Mostly from a few friends and my mom.
10 missed calls from Mom.
Oh, I'm so dead when I come home tonight.
"Is that your mom?" A warm breath penetrated right below my neck. I jumped in the other direction from him clutching the phone tightly to my chest.
Why does he sneak up like that?
"Yeah, she's worried about me" I mumbled looking the another way to avoid his watch again. His eyes lingered on me but his face appears to be mellow as he resumed working to examine the star again.
"I need to summon it, but I need some type of jewelry to do so," Danny changed the subject and his eyes towards me to the plethora of jewelry placed on me.
I was so dressed up but now I feel like an idiot with my makeup practically fading away and my hair in a tangled mess. I couldn't help but feel self-conscious about how I looked in front of him.
"I don't know what your thinking but I don't like it," I grimly remarked.
"I was going to ask you for some type of jewelry but it doesn't matter, I already have a ring I haven't tested yet"
"Should I pick the necklace or the ring?" Danny held a chain in one hand and a wide despite flat silver ring in another.
I tried to consider the best choice. The chain doesn't suit him with his grand attire. It seems too suspicious and odd especially since he already had one on his vest. However, the ring is more subtle and won't attract a ton of attention.
"You should go for the ring," his lips curve into a smile in satisfaction.
"I was thinking just that," Daniel placed the silver ring and placed it on his first digit. "It's not as noticeable as a chain, and it would be annoying too." He lets out a cringe expression towards me voicing his over-exaggerated disgust. I couldn't help but let out a small laugh.
"Your so smart Y/N"
I sneer as if he was joking and quickly darted the other way to avoid him noticing the flustered look on my face. I was never called smart by Adam. I always was teased to be dumb and stupid and I would let him think this through my persona I would put up for him. I let him reside in his glory and ego in exchange for a couple of affectionate words and gestures.
"Thank you," I mumble nervously and took a peek back at the Sign of Satan on the ground illuminating a brighter sage green glow than usual.
Danny kneeled down to the demon-like symbol the emerald color drenching Danny with its juniper hue.
"Are you ready?" He peeked at me with a mischievous smile with his ringed fingers ready to snap to summon who knows what.
I stared at him attempting to make a prepared look.
He snapped his fingers the verdant color flickering like lightning out of the ring.
