Keet:
1. (Adjective) an excitable character in the media, usually male
2. (Slang) the nickname for Keaton Phineas Douglass

Keaton Phineas Douglass was a normal, happy-go-lucky guy. He loved his mama and his job, his friends and his home. He will make you feel happy and safe.
Sounds like the kind of guy you'd wanna date, right? Except, like most of the people we have a crush on, he isn't real. Keaton is a secondary character in the hit video game, "Memento Morí".
Created by Sullen Starz, "Memento Morí" is about a teenager's journey with friends to discover the meaning of life, and how you only live once. Because Armageddon is near. Keaton's alarm rang out to the sound of the Beatles. He opened his eyes. He turned over and looked at the time. He pressed the snooze button and sat up. He outstretched his arms as a semi-silent yawn escaped. When he was done, he twitched his nose to assure himself he was awake. His eyes seemed to take on the light that was so normal for him. He got out of bed, putting on some bunny slippers so he wouldn't accidentally wake Mama. He walked over to his closet and looked over the casual clothes in his armoire. Okay, what do ya got for me today? After careful consideration, he settled on a yellow short-sleeve polo shirt with houndstooth pants held up by white suspenders. It was exciting, today. Yet again, everyday was always exciting for Keaton. He has two default emotions: happiness (which comes in a wide spectrum, ranging from pride to giddily estatic) and confusion. It didn't exhaust him in the slightest. He was happy when he could make others happy.
When he was finished getting dressed, he slid over to the grandfather clock down the hall. Keaton named him Alfred.
"Morning, Alfred! What's the time?" Keaton looked. 7 am on the dot. Keaton nodded. He rushed down three flights of stairs and rushed out of the door that led to the living quarters. He looked around. He cleaned up nicely last night, but there was still some things that he accidentally missed. Dust, for one. But it was perfectly okay. He wiped everything down and started over to the sign. He flipped it so one word was announced to the out-
"OPEN".
There was already a line of people, waiting for a repair, a drink, or a friendly face. Keaton smiled.
"Good morning, friends! Mama's is now open for business! Come on in!"
The people filed in as everyone sat in their regular seats. Keaton remembered everyone who came regularly. The first person who asked for advice was always a little old Irish lady named Dorothea Brixby. Keaton was her first American friend when she arrived from Portlaiose, Ireland a few years back. She took a liking to him, and to this day, Keaton still doesn't know why.
"Good morning, Mrs. Brixby."
"Good mornin' lad. How's Monica?"
"Mama's doing wonderfully, thank you. How's Courtney?" Keaton looked over Mrs Brixby's shoulder. "Where is Courtney?"
Mrs Brixby's lower lip quivered. Keaton's eyes went wide. "Oh, sweets."
Mrs. Brixby collapsed into tears. She's been trying to fight tears when she got the call, but she could only stay strong for so long. Courtney was only twelve when she was diagnosed with cancer. No one could believe how quickly it spread, least of all her mother, Dorothea Brixby. Keaton has dealt with every Harry Hardluck and Sally Sobstory with an open mind and heart. He actually visited Courtney a few months ago to make her smile. She was deep into treatment, and was in need of some serotonin. Keaton learned a bit of magic and gave her a rabbit plush to keep her warm and give her hugs. Keaton hoped that she was getting all the hugs she could fathom in the Up. But for now, a mother had outlived her kid. That was a hard pill to swallow, and one she didn't have to swallow alone. As she layed her head in her arms, sobbing, Keaton gave her a hug, quietly shushing her.
"Shh. It's okay. I'm here, Dorothea. I'm so sorry. Hey, shh. It's okay."
When he broke free of the hug, he looked into Mrs. Brixby's eyes to see if she was in need of the treatment. Uh-huh, definitely. Keaton rushed to the back and grabbed some peppermints from the emergency stash of treatment. He knew that several of the people who came here were fond of peppermints, so when they were down, Keaton felt they were entitled to their favorite candy. He presented it to her via a slight of hand trick. That gave her a little giggle. Okay, on the right track. He gently took her hand in his and transferred the sweet to her.
"Stay strong, Dorothea. I'm here if you need anything. And Mama is here when I'm gone. Okay?"
Mrs. Brixby nodded. That put a smile on his face. "Okay. See you soon." He waved as she walked out. But his heart started squeezing in his chest. That really hurt him to hear the news... Courtney was gone. It seemed like only yesterday she came rushing behind the counter, tears in her eyes, as Dorothea explained the cancer diagnosis. No matter. One hiccup in the day. He looked up. A large presence filled the room.
"Esè!"
Keaton smiled. JJ had been close to him since high school. Keaton had adopted him and his friends and was their school father until he graduated. Mama was confused at first, but she was so happy to see her grandchildren that she didn't disown them. Mama is a proud grandmama, and she'll say that to your face.
"Morning, JJ."
"So, you think I could get up there tonight and score us some putas? Eh? Eh?" JJ nudged Keaton, and it took some self restraint to fight back a smile.
"No way, Josè. It's karaoke night tonight. And if you're not singing 'She Bangs', you ain't getting on."
"Oh, I'm gonna get on, tonight. Just watch, amigo."
Keaton laughed. "You're nasty, JJ."
"You know it!" JJ cackled as he sat in his booth, waiting for some hotcakes. Keaton rolled his eyes and started the griddle to flip some cakes when he heard the creaking of floorboards. He smiled. Mama's awake. Keaton stuck his head out and sure enough...
"HEY!" A collective yell from the customers threw Mama off her rhythm.
"Oh! Mind your own. I swear, it's like you've never seen a woman before." She sauntered to the back and locked eyes with her son. Her face grew soft. "Hey, Punkin."
"Mornin, Mama." Keaton stuck his cheek out to receive a kiss from Mama. When she did, Keaton's nose twitched and he blushed. He then went back to work. "How'd you sleep?"
"Oh, I slept fine. And you? Did you have the dream about the woman again?"
"Yeah. It was nice too. In this one, you met her and liked her."
"Hah! The only good girl in this world is your mother, and lord help us if you meet a girl just like me."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
Keaton could just barely hear Mama sigh. "Keet, nobody is perfect. Not even me. I've done my fair share of things I ain't proud of, and knowing this will haunt me to the grave. Look, we're off topic here. The girl. What did she look like? What was her name?"
"She didn't give me her name, because my dreams didn't want to be helpful. But I remember her face. When I see it again, I'll know. I'll know who she is." And maybe, Keaton thought, she's dreamt of me, too.
