This is more on the casual side of clothing back in the day, and also whenever the ladies had to move around a lot. It can also come in long sleeves, but much less extravagant than the Maria Clara/ Traje de Mestiza. The skirt is still long because of modesty purposes. Basically it's style and practicality while still being modest, as was the standard back in the day.
