The bright screen of their device shone on their sleep-deprived face. Dark mode still didn't seem dim enough to keep their eyes from straining. As they read on and on through the chapter, a frown grew on their face. Turning off their phone, they rolled onto their stomach with a deep sigh. A cold pillow against their cheek and thin blankets on their back.
They knew.
______
"Wait, so- Huh?" You sat up, looking at Kris as if he was insane. But maybe you both were.
"Do you... Do you believe me?" They asked, an uncertain look written on their face.
Kris had just told you about their situation. The lack of control, the forced choices, the one controlling the strings. It made you nauseous. There was a creeping suspicion that they hadn't told you everything. Not that they were obligated to, of course. But the far-off look in their eye told you that even they didn't have all the answers.
"Do you think that's what's happening with me?" You asked, staring down at your hands as you cracked and stretched them out. Your head spun from the contradictions and meanings.
They shook their head.
"Real, just not me... Who else would I be?" With a huff, you lay on the floor. "I'm like some vessel for Satan and all his spawn."
You looked up at Kris, who was getting up to stand. They dusted off the dirt and grass off their pants before realizing they spilled it all over you.
"S-Sorry!-" They cleared their throat, their voice coming out a little too loud. "Sorry."
"It's fine, but anyways, do you think I'm-"
"Sloth!"
Ralsei's voice broke your conversation with Kris. His bright eyes seemed even brighter when he saw you awake.
Before you could blink, the fluffy prince had you in a bone-breaking hug. That was dramatic, of course, but it did hurt. It was like being under a soft blanket. But that soft blanket had a car on top of it.
"Rals!" You said with a strained voice.
"I was so worried! Are you feeling okay? Does your head hurt? Are you bleeding? Do you need me to heal you? Oh goodness you look so dazed!"
You frantically shook your head, a small smile on your lips. "I'm okay! I just- I was just exhausted from today! I'm all better now!"
While it was a lie, you knew you had to make it become the truth. You would be okay. You would be better. Any other option was off the table.
Ralsei didn't look convinced, and he frowned, looking around. "Shame Susie isn't here."
You sighed, nodding in agreement. You should've gotten mad at her after passing out so you could get a second nap in.
"Let's just go? I'll be careful, promise."
"You should rest."
Much to your dismay, Kris nodded in agreement. You scowled and stood up. Now standing, you were a bit taller than both of them.
You dramatically placed your hand on your chest and looked up with a sigh. "My heart may rest, knowing that we're steps closer to saving the world."
Ralsei didn't seem impressed, but there was a light smile on his face. He looked to Kris for their opinion and/or input, but they simply shrugged. "I suppose we should keep going. But if you feel tired, we're stopping. Okay?"
