On the penultimate week of school, Hawkins Tiger Band had begun the slow descent into madness that could only be called band practice. When the final release bell had rung, a flurry of yellow/green raglan shirts rushed into the band hall, eager to finish as quick as possible.

Among the group was Darcy Carver, resident fish-out-of-water. Transferring from Connecticut in the middle of the school year had already left a damper on her reputation, her ill-fated relationship with Billy Hargrove not helping either.

In a perfect storm of jealousy and rumors, it quickly spread through the school that Darcy was quick to jump the bones of any man who looked at her the right way. Unfortunately, that was easier and safer for Darcy to live with than the truth.

She didn't like men at all.

"God, Darcy. Just because you were good at whatever podunk school you came from, doesn't mean you actually deserve to have the solo. Although, you probably showed Mr. Glenwood just how good at blowing you were." Kelly Lakes called as Darcy headed up to the stand, carrying her trombone and music in hand.

"Oh, fuck this," Darcy said, dropping her instrument and storming over to the girl, her long oil black hair flying behind her. Without thinking of the consequences, Darcy quickly pushed both of them over the edge of the risers.

"Girl fight!" - "Beat her ass, Kelly!" - "Go for her nose!"

A raucous symphony began around the girls as fists and neon accessories went flying. After what felt like ages, two adults came rushing in to stop the tussle; Mr. Glenwood attending to Kelly and her bloody nose, and Mrs. Hedgeman yanking Darcy off of her. "Miss Carver. My office. Now." The stonefaced principal said as she grabbed the back of Darcy's sweater and began to usher her out of the door.

"Mrs. Hedgeman! Kelly started it. It was self-defense. Darcy was just fighting for her honor. " A voice hollered from the brass section, breaking the thick tension in the air. "If self-defense is a punishable offense, then you're taking me in too." A head of messy brown hair pushed through the crowd, planting itself right in front of the principal and the girl she was still holding on to.

"If you insist, Miss Buckley." Hedgeman said with a sigh as she motioned for the girl to come to her.

Flashing a quick smile to Darcy, Robin tucked her hands behind her head dramatically as she waited to be carried out too.

Under her staggering breath, Darcy couldn't believe that Robin was doing what she was doing.

"Pinch me, I'm dreaming."

With a cough of annoyance and resentment, Hedgeman snapped Darcy out of her head and back to reality. "Did you say something, Carver?"

"No ma'am. Just... thinking out loud."

"That's what I thought." She said, yanking them slightly towards the office.

Looking back at the carnage she left, Darcy noticed Kelly holding a bloody nose. Between delivering the comeuppance Kelly had coming for her and realizing that Robin knew of her existence, Darcy was ecstatic. Before she realized it, a wide-tooth grin had taken over her face.

"You've got a pretty smile, you know that? Seeing it kinda makes this worth the permanent record mark. " Robin whispered to Darcy as she chuckled.

'Oh, my God. I cracked my head on the risers. I've died and this is heaven.'

A million thoughts raced through Darcy's head, one louder than the others.

'Robin Buckley thinks I have a pretty smile.'
