Renee drove us to the airport with the windows rolled down, much to my disliking. It was seventy-five degrees in Phoenix, the sky a perfect, cloudless blue. I was wearing a paramore hoodie despite all of this.
In the Olympic Peninsula of northwest Washington State, a small town named Forks exists under a near-constant cover of clouds. It rains on this town more than any other place in the United States of America. It was from this town and its gloomy, omnipresent shade that our mother "escaped" with us when we were but just babies. It was in this town that we'd been lucky enough to return to spend a month every summer until I was fifteen. That was the year Isabella Swan, my younger sister, pitched a big enough of a fit until our father, Charlie Swan, vacationed with us in California for two weeks instead.
It was to Forks that Bella and I returned to– an action of great horror on Bella's part. She detested Forks.
I loved it. The never ending green and forests, the people, the cold, wet climate, the constant gloominess.
"Bella," our mother said, the last of a thousand times– before we got on the plane. "You don't have to do this." I was used to Renee ignoring me, treating me like I wasn't even her daughter. I deserved this, in some ways.
Renee looks like Bella, except with short hair and laugh lines.
"I want to go," Bella lied. She'd always been a bad liar, but she'd been saying this lie so frequently it almost sounded convincing.
"Tell Charlie I said hi."
"I will."
"I'll see you soon," Renee insisted. "You can come home whenever you want- I'll come right back as soon as you need me.
"Don't worry about me," Bella urged. "It'll be great. I love you, Mom."
Renee hugged her tightly for a moment, never sparing me a glance as I got on the plane, then she was gone.
It was a four-hour flight from Phoenix to Seattle, an hour drive down to Forks. Our Dad would be picking us up. Flying bothers me a bit, but I was actually looking forward to the hour car ride with my and Bella's father, Charlie Swan. I knew the situation was reversed for Bella.
Our father had been fairly nice about the whole ordeal. He seemed genuinely pleased that we were coming to live with him for the first time with any degree of permanence. He'd already gotten us registered for high school and was going to help Bella get a car. I'd asked him not to buy me anything.
I knew he was a little confused by Bella's decision– like our mother before us, she hadn't made a secret of her distaste for Forks. Unlike them, I loved Forks, and had been excited to move back.
When we landed in Port Angeles, it was raining, making me smile. I had gladly said goodbyes to the sun.
Dad was waiting for us with the cruiser. I was expecting this, too. Our father is Police Chief Swan to the good people of Forks. Bella's primary motivation behind buying a car, despite the scarcity of her funds, was that she refused to be driven around town in a car with red and blue lights on top.
Dad gave Bella an awkward, one armed hug when she stumbled her way off the plane, then gave me a bear hug. It was easy to tell both of our parents' favorites, though Charlie would never admit it. Renee reminded me every day.
"It's good to see you, Az, Bells," he said, smiling as he caught and steadied Bella. "You haven't changed much." he said to her. "How's Renee?" he asked me. I grimaced. Renee was fine.... When I wasn't around.
"Renee is... fine. It's good to see you, too, Dad." I answered.
Bella only had a few bags, and I only had one. Most of her Arizona were too permeable for Washington. Renee and her had pooled their resources to supplement Bella's winter wardrobe, but it was still scanty. All of my clothes had been blue jeans and hoodies, perfect for Forks. It all fit easily into the trunk of the cruiser.
