For the next few days, things were easy. We wore our masks all day, started to ration, but got to hang out like a family. But, on the 6th day since the emergency broadcast message, Karla got sick. It was just a cold ( probably because I had no firewood left for the furnace) So, I had to go out of the house and get her medicine. I was terrified to see what the state the world was in after an emergency, but Karla needed medicine, we were running low on water, and we needed fire wood. I decided I would go out, but only after prepping my self for the worse. I got a duffle bag and a book bag to take with me, I also included a list of things we needed, a knife, and a handgun. I nodded my head to finish off my mental checklist and went into Karla and Kyle's rooms. I kissed Kyle on the head and promised to be back tomorrow. But, when I went to Karla, she was still awake. "Where are you going?" she asked. I look at her and put my hand up to her cheek, " Just don't worry and get some sleep." I responded. She sat up and gave me a hard stare," No, tell me where the hell you're going!", " Karla, we're erring low on water, we're out of wood, and you're sick and need medicine, so i'm going out.." I said. Karla then shook her head and began to speak, but before she could say much, I cut her off,"I said that I wouldn't let anything happen to you or Kyle, so I'm going." I then kissed her cheek and walked out of the house.
Outside was nothing like I expected. Everything looked......normal. Even though it looked so normal I didn't dare take off my mask. So, I got in my car started to drive to the nearest Dollar General.
After 10 minutes, I got into town. Things were completely different from the block I lived on. There were fires raging in the streets, cars abandoned and littered throughout the street, and people just wandering around like lost children. I slowed down the car, trying to get some information from the people. That's when I saw her. A teenage girl who I recognized as one of the helpers in Kyle's class. Kyle always talked about the girl, Miranda, and how she was his favorite helper. Why could she be possibly roaming the streets? I brought the car up to her and rolled down the window," Hey Miranda! It's Kyle's dad. I was wandering if you could tell me what happened. Why are all these people just walking aroun-" Miranda turned her head to look at me but instead I saw a horrifying sight. I screamed. Her face was half gone and chunks of flesh hung from what was left of her face. One of her eyes were a dark pit. But, the worst part was her nose. The tip of if was torn off and blood gushed out, but the blood was as dark as oil. I couldn't stand to look at the once friend of my son any longer and speed away as fast as I could.
