Carly Shay felt absolutely and completely overwhelmed as she left her brother's house and returned to her own. She couldn't seem to stop repeating the nights events over and over. She knew she was going into what Harper called one of her "Overthinking spirals" but she couldn't help it.
She and Freddie were talking, when She said, "I just wanted to make you happy." She talked about the bird idea and how ridiculous she thought Pearl's thought Process was. I mean, who would look at Freddie and have their first thought be, 'Yes, that guy would like a bird party.' I mean come on.
Freddie, who obviously didn't hear the door open, replied with "Come on Carly, that's not Fair! Pearl will never know me as well as you do!" When he saw Carly's eyes widen, he turned around to see Pearl's face, a pained expression painted over her features. He stood there, not knowing what to say. That's when Pearl changed everything.
"You two are clearly in love with each other." she huffed, eyes darting back and forth between them accusingly.
Freddie scoffed, as he does whenever he's nervous.
Carly was trying to scrounge together the words that could deny this. She was racking her head to find yet another excuse to save the disaster that had become her best friends birthday, when her eyes locked on his.
Everything else in her head went away, besides the words that had just a moment ago left Pearl's lips, and the look In Freddie's eyes, filled with anxiety and uncertainty, and something she couldn't quite place. In those few seconds, she knew. Carly knew that Pearl was right. She was in love with Freddie.
Freddie, who pined for her for their whole childhood. Freddie, who endured Sam's tormenting and teasing, in order to remain in Carly's life. Freddie, who after years, agreed to restart a web show that was put to rest years ago, without Sam. Freddie, who went with her on that ridiculous road trip with the party suite. Freddie, who stuck by her side for decades without fail.
It was always meant to be him, wasn't it.
She turned the key and walked into her apartment, internally debating her feelings. She knew that she was taking this overthinking thing too far, but the thoughts wouldn't leave her mind.
She shook her head, clearing away negative thoughts. She ignored the nerves in her gut and mentally skimmed through her list of de-stressors. Walking over to the stove, Carly ignited the burner that had the teapot, then opened the cupboard. The only teabags she had left was plain green, but above was Harper's stack of apple cinnamon. She ultimately decided that Harper wouldn't mind, as she had witnessed the conversation that night that happened to be replaying like a song in Carly's head, and opened the box to take one. She put it in her favorite mug to brew, along with a little sugar.
Sipping the scalding tea, she sat down on her couch with one of the blankets Millicent left in her apartment, a small part of her brain registering the faint scent of Freddie's cologne. She turned on the TV, and scrolled to find something comforting to watch, eventually settling on New Girl. It was so entertaining, Waiting for Nick and Jess to realize that they were meant to be, even if it took them many, many years to finally end up together. She then set the remote down, and sunk deeper into the couch, clutching the burning hot tea as if it were a lifeline.
After she got about halfway through the first episode, Harper banged the door open, throwing her keys, shoes and phone to the side. Carly didn't stray her eyes away from the screen. Harper headed straight to her bedroom, and a few minutes later emerged wearing a plain black T shirt and some grey joggers. She grabbed a random bottle off of their liquor area and plopped down next to Carly on the couch. The room was dark, the only light being the TV, glaring on their faces. Carly turned her head, only to see Harper already staring at her, then returned her eyes to the TV. "Well," Carly said, "That was... an interesting evening."
