Chapter 1

With a bright, optimistic smile, Monika stepped forward with a handful of fliers in her grasp and spoke up. "Welcome to the Literature Club! A place where you can express your true feelings about literature to it's fullest and!..."

She sighed.

"... Damn it." She stopped midway and gazed upon the papers in her hands, twirling with the edge of their corners with the tip of her fingers. "No... This won't do."

The silent buzzing of the air conditioner filled the clubroom, leaving the girl standing alone in the middle of the class to ponder in deliberation to herself. The lively breeze of the air brushed the bangs away from the girl's forehead, tickling the skin gently. Monika's shoulders slumped pathetically and she knitted her eyebrows soon after. She impatiently tapped her foot against the ground before letting out a frustrated groan of irritation and stormed over to the teacher's table, slamming the fliers on the stiff superficies of the wooden furniture. She dug her long, acrylic nails that were covered in transparent, slightly glossy paint into the table and glared into it.

A distant laughter echoed in the hallway right outside the clubroom, making Monika want to cover her ears with anything that came to hand and stifle the noise. She hated it. She worked overnights for this and it's still crap.

She grabbed the paper fliers and with a swift move of her arm, threw them to the floor.

... She walked back to them and picked them back up.

Now, much more tenderly, she placed them into her folder and closed her tired, emerald eyes, resting her cheek against her weak fist. Monika took a deep breath in, taking her time to inhale and exhale the air entering her lungs. Little by little, she eased her tense, stiff muscles and carefully reopened her eyes. After a long pause of staring into the distance, she extended her hands and took hold of the folder with the fliers in it, watching how the cover reflected the sunlight that came from the windows, making it look shiny and showcasing all of the miniature bumps on it's superficies. She cracked it open and pulled out the papers, staring at them.

The Literature Club

A place for reading and appreciating the wonders of literature!

Yeah, this was lame.

Monika groaned again to herself and rubbed the small eyebags that were forming beneath her exhausted, sleep desperate eyes. She had forgotten to hide them with makeup. For someone like herself with a popular reputation, the idea of overworking herself to the point where she'd rather sleep in bed those precious, sweet twenty minutes that she could be spending making herself look appropriate - was a low blow.

Monika took a deep breath, again. Staring at the fliers doesn't help with coming up with new ideas for the club. So... what else could she do? The president of the club pondered, repeating the question over and over again.

Her acrylic, glossy nails tapped the surface of the table slowly and delicately as she wondered about ways to attract more people into the clubroom. However, her sleep deprived mind felt like it was put under a barrier, stopping her from reaching her wanted results.

The air conditioner and the clock in the class were the only audible sounds aside from the rhyming tapping of Monika's nails. She slowly got up and exited the clubroom, leaving the door slightly parted. Her white and pink shoes clicked as she stepped through the bright hallway, dragging her feet from exhaustion.

Yeah. She needed to sleep properly tonight... And she will. Monika promised that to herself.

The girl turned on her shoe and stumbled into the empty stairway, beginning to go to the first floor of the school. The staircase was pretty dirty on the third and second floor yet on the first floor, Monika saw one of the janitors cleaning the stairs. The janitor politely greeted her and she flashed a charming smile, and a little nod in return.
