So once my mom married my step father things were okay.... At first. Things quieted down and I was doing well in school. Then my step father decided that he wanted to adopt me. In order for that to happen we needed permission from my biological father.
Growing up I never really wondered about my dad, I knew that most kids had one, and I just didnt. It was better that way though. But my dad wouldn't sign the papers for my step father to adopt me. He decided he wanted to be apart of my life. So I started going all the way out to Bend, Oregon most weekends
At the time he was living with his adoptive mother, and their roommate Lewis. When I asked my dad why he wasn't around before he said something along the lines of I was sick, or I had things I had to do. I always just accepted that. Now I know the truth. He was an alcoholic, big time. I guess that's why he never drank around me, my mom would always ask me when I got home Did daddy drink? Or What did you guys have to eat?
I told her the truth, that dad never drank, even when Lewis did. I loved visiting him. There was a woman next door who ran a daycare. The kids there all called me a "city girl" until I slowly began to adjust to the country life. My bedazzled jeans gave way to worn in cut offs. And my princess dolls wear exchanged for horses and farm animals.
I began to build a treehouse in the back yard, complete with an old armchair and a ramp for the neighbors cat.
My dad had a dog named Alison who I only met once. The second time I went to my dads house, we came home to find that she had got her paw stuck in the fence. She died before we even got home. I remember sitting on the couch crying for hours while my dad dug a shallow grave in the yard. I didn't sleep that night.
The next time I came over we went out and got a new dog. Her name was Sasha. I began to feel like I belonged there. I felt like I finally had a family.
