Wings!

I've had a couple requests for wing tutorials. Wings are something I and a lot of people find tricky, so I'm going to show you my thought process behind drawing wings. This isn't a step by step but hopefully it's helpful. Also I decided to use highlighters to hopefully make this less confusing lol.

Anyways here we go!

So this is how I view dragon wings

So this is how I view dragon wings. There are three joints (purple) and three main bone things which are the pink, blue and green. Then the yellow things are just the other smaller wing bones. Um I don't know proper dragon wing words so we'll go with that.

Anyways this is a normal wing shape. Then what I do when I'm drawing is imagine how the joints would work and how everything would move, and then draw that as best I can. You have to use your imagination a little. I'm not sure if that makes sense but here are some examples:

This is a half-closed wing, kind of in a relaxed position

This is a half-closed wing, kind of in a relaxed position. The arrows show the movement from the first drawing, and as you can see all the bones are the same, just in slightly different positions based on how they would move.

Tip, the pink and blue lines bend the same way a human arm would, which can help work out positioning.

Here's another example. In this one the wing is mostly closed. I drew it as if the green bone folded inwards, so you can only see one of the yellow bones while the others and the blue one are mostly hidden. This is a good position for a dragon in mid-flight, or maybe if they're trying to shield something they're holding in their talons. Or as just a regular relaxed position.

This one is a sketch of a closed wing

This one is a sketch of a closed wing. I think it's pretty straight forwards, same rules apply as with the other positions. This would be good for if they're walking somewhere or sitting, just a normal relaxed wing.

This is the same as the above drawing, just with the wing a bit lower down so you can see the part where it connects to the body

This is the same as the above drawing, just with the wing a bit lower down so you can see the part where it connects to the body. The closed wing is the same though.

Those are all the main positions I can think of, I'm not sure if this makes a ton of sense but this is how I think of dragon wings when I draw them. If you have any questions feel free to ask, or if I forgot a position or you think a step-by-step would be more helpful just let me know. I hope this was helpful though!
