Trudging along a wasteland of bones, the six demigods and one sorceress slowly became discouraged. Diamond, the peacock had vanished, when they boarded Charon's ferry. They had just passed the fields of Asphodel, when a howl pierced the thin air. "Old three-head." Leo muttered. The mist curled back, and there he was. Cerberus was a monster, towering almost thirty meters into the air. One of his heads was asleep. Another chewed the remains of a red ball, while the third tried to snatch it. He didn't notice them. Percy whistled softly. "That's the same ball you gave him all those years ago, right Annabeth?" Annabeth nodded mutely. "Should we do this in style or should we just slip past?" Atala hissed. "Slip past." Calypso squeaked. "What's up babe? Scared of the monster?" Leo teased her. Calypso jabbed her thumbs into his chest. "Ow!" Leo whispered. "Lets just go before this gets out of hand." Hazel suggested.
They had almost all made it past, when Calyso stepped on a fibia. Crunch. Cerberus whirled all his three heads around. Calypso let out a whimper. "Good...dog?" she tried. Cerberus growled. He lunged. "Cal!" Leo tackled her, pushing her out of the way just as Cerberus's claws swiped the air. The claws sank into the ground, inches away from decapitating Calypso. Leo shot a white hot burst of flames at Cerberus's head. The beast howled and shook as the flames burned. "RUN!" Frank cried. Everyone ran in a random direction. They passed an imposing fortress made of black rock, encrusted with diamonds and rubies. "Plu- I mean Hades's palace!" Frank gasped. They stopped at the front gates to catch their breath.
Just when they thought they were safe, the shrieks of three creatures made themselves heard. "Not these again!" Percy cried. "Run!" They sprinted towards the right of the fortress. Three bat ladies burst out of the front gate, brandishing whips made of fire. "DIE INTRUDERS!" they yelled. Atala summoned all her will and turned. She screamed and thrust out her hands, and lotuses grew from the burning wasteland of bones and made a thick wall between them and the three Furies. "I bought us some time!" Atala shouted. Already Atala saw the lotuses burning as the Furies slashed through them with their whips of fire. "Hide!" Hazel yelled. They all ran towards a hole in the ground to shelter. "Uh, guys?" Annabeth cried. "That's-" "No time!" Leo yelled. "Wait! Annabeth's right! That's-" Percy started, but he was interrupted by a shriek of fury. The Furies had broken through the barrier. They dove into the hole. The hole was an extremely deep pit. The pit seemed to suck them in. The Furies shrieked in anger as their prey escaped them. Suddenly Atala knew what Percy and Annabeth had been trying to tell them. 'Ah well. Too late.' she thought.
The seven friends fell down, down, down into the unknown.
