Denise Henderson was not patient.
She sat with her legs crossed and her hands clasped nervously in her lap. She glanced around the room at all her worried friends. Kat was even less patient and remained standing, sighing for everyone to hear.
"Would you please stop sighing, it's distracting," Ben begged, not bothering to look up from his phone screen."Oh, terribly sorry that I'm interrupting your precious video game." Kat cocked a hip and tapped her foot with annoyance.
"Don't you diss on videogames, sweetheart, or else I'll bring up your Pinterest obsession," Nathan Connors muttered from his chair, where he sat staring off with a dazed look.
"Would you all shut it? They're trying to work," Denise pointed out and gestured at the cell door.
"You mean I'm trying to work," Ellie grumbled, "he's pretending to be useful."
"Fine! I'll go sit in the corner looking stupid," Leo Hill snapped, stomping over to the bench and plopping himself down on it. Ellie mumbled and slipped her hand back through the bars of the door, trying to pick the lock. She grumbled as another bobby pin broke. The group fell silent.
"I feel like we're in a movie. Things like this don't happen to normal people," Denise muttered, leaning her head against the wall, "We are not The Goonies."
"You're right. We're not. We wouldn't be in this mess if Kat here had any self control." Nathan said, crossing the tiny cell and sitting beside Leo.
"What? He was hot..." Kat confessed.
"Hot? You flirted with a crazy person!" Ben shoved his phone in his pocket and folded his arms. "And then insulted him!" He added.
"Either way, we'd still be stuck in here. The guy has a deranged infatuation with Ellie." Denise argued and leaned her head against the wall. "Have we tried calling someone?"
There was a snap and Ellie cursed.
"Yeah," She growled, wiping her forehead and digging around in her purse for another bobby pin, "Everyone's at the parade, and they aren't answering."
"I could've been sitting in a comfy lawn chair watching the cheerleaders go by. But noooo! We had to be 'rebellious teenagers'!" Leo put his head in his hands as he thought about what he was missing.
"Hey, this was your idea, genius!" Kat snapped.
Before Leo could respond, footseps echoed from down the hallway. Ellie scrambled to gather her broken bobby pins and other tools into her purse. Denise grabbed her arm and yanked her away from the cell door. Nathan snatched up the purse and sat on it. Their captor appeared, smiling through the bars.
"Well, this has been fun, hasn't it?" Daniel Peck held up the keys to their release. Nathan nodded his head.
"Oh yes. Definitely. We should do it again sometime." Leo elbowed him. Danny glared, picking up on his sarcasm. Ellie jumped up before Nathan could do any more damage.
"Danny look," She stepped closer and glanced over her shoulder, as if she didn't trust the others. Danny, intrigued, leaned in as well, "I just want to personally apologize for all the unkind words and behavior of my friends." Ellie looked at the ground shyly, "I wouldn't have done the same."
Danny furrowed his eyebrows and replied, "I don't understand."
"Ellie, what are you doing?!" Ben whispered. He was a bit worried about where this was going.
"She's confessing." Kat said, picking up on her friend's plan. "She never actually liked you Ben."
"What! But-" He began to argue, but Denise shushed him.
