It had been a month---- since my arrival at UK and since my classes started. Everything seemed to be going great. I already made so many friends. I lived in a hostel dorm alone. The atmosphere was so much different, the interior was kind of similar, and the scent was different aswell.
A new change in life.
I closed my laptop and opened my phone, as I sat on the bench outside of the university.
I call home everyday and it was time to call home since it is 10 am here and it was 2 pm there.
"Aslam o Alaykum, Tayi jaan!" I cheerfully said, pressing the phone to my ear.
"Walaikum Assalam. Kesi ho?" She asked.
(How are you?)"Main Alhamdulillah theek aap sab kese hain?" I asked.
(I am fine how are you all?)"Ham bhi theek hai bas tumhari yaad aarahi hai" she said and I smiled.
(We are fine but we are missing you)"Sab kya karhe hain?" I asked.
(What is everyone doing?)"Zaroon aur Shehryar Daniyal ke saath khel rahe hain ludo aur usse tang karhe hain" I chuckled "aur Falak ham sab ke liye duphair ki chai bana rahi hain. Dadi jaan apne kamre mai hain aur mai aur tumhari ammi abhi bas duniya ki baatain karhe the"
(Zaroon and Shehryar are playing ludo with Daniyal and bullying him. Falak is making afternoon tea for all of us. And me and your mom were just talking about the world)"Apka matlab gossiping." I smiled.
(You mean gossiping.)I talked to my mom for a while and then talked to tayi ammi again.
"Zaroon se baat kara dein" I nervously said.
(Can you let me talk to Zaroon?)Zaroon had been mad at me ever since I came to UK. He hasn't talked to me once despite the promise I made to talk to him daily.
He was angry that I had left without waking him up.
"Acha" she said I heard some shuffling and then I heard her say "yelo Zaroon Jannat se baat karlo"
(Ok. Here Zaroon talk to Jannat)"Mujhe nahi karni." Zaroon said, uninterested.
(I don't want to)"Beta woh busy hai na toh-" I cut her off
(He is busy so-)"Maine sunliya tha usne kya kaha hai." I sadly said.
(I heard what he said)"Acha tayi jaan mai baat mai baat karti hoon meri class shuru honi wali hai" I said "Allah hafiz" I got off the call.
(Okay Tayi jaan I have to go. I'll talk to you later my class are about to start)━━━━━━━

"Agar usse baat karlete toh kya mout aajati. Ab bechari udaas hoke classes jai gi" my mom said to me.
(If you could've talked to her then would you have died? Now she will go to her classes sad)I didn't say anything. I kept my eyes on the ludo board and clenched my fist.
"Usne apna wada tora hai." I said.
(She broke her promise.)"Zaroon, woh tumhari neend kharab nahi karna chahti thi." My mother said.
(Zaroon, she didn't wanted to ruin your sleep.)"Agar tees minute uth bhi jata aur usko airport chor kar aajata toh koi big deal nahi thi." I said, looking at her.
(If I woke up for 30 minutes and drop her at airport, it wouldn't have been a big deal.)"Uff, tum kabhi bare nahi hoge." She said and walked away. I clenched my jaw.
(Uff, you'll never grow up.)Tang aagaya hoon yeh jumla sun sun kar.
I stood up and followed after her to the kitchen.
"Isme napakhtagi ki koi baat nahi hai, ammi. Mujhe usse ik akhri baar dekhna tha." I said.
(There's nothing about immaturity in this. I wanted to see her one last time.)"Mar nahi gai woh, Zaroon." My mom said and I felt a shot in my heart.
(She didn't die, Zaroon.)"Aap aese kese bol sakti hain?" I asked.
(How can you say that?)"Mera yeh matlab that keh tum usse phone par dekh sakte ho. Baat kar sakte ho." She said.
(I meant that you can see her on your phone. You can talk to her.)"Woh ik jaisa nahi hai." I said, vulnerable and tears gathering in my eyes.
(It's not the same.)She looked at me because of my tone and noticed the tears in my eyes.
"Tum ro rahe ho?" She asked, shockedly.
(You are crying?)I looked away, trying to wipe my tears.
"Ab hasiye ga nahi." I said, trying to joke.
(Don't laugh now.)She hugged me and I allowed myself to cry in her shoulder as we stood in the warmness of the kitchen.
