Rose garden filled with thorns

My phone buzzed, the screen lighting up with a new message. I flipped it over and tried to focus on the line I was drawing. It buzzed again. "If you do that one more time, I swear, I am going to flip you across the room."

The landline phone behind me started to ring, and as I didn't pick up, the message I had left started to play. After the tone, someone's voice started to come out, slightly messed up by the speaker. "Shit. Damn it, Cass, why won't you pick up? We need to talk... Seriously, I swear I didn't mean it. No excuses, just sorry. Please, just talk to me again." Her voice broke on the last part. My resolve broke just a little bit. After all, she was my best friend...

I had just been so pissed at her. I didn't even really know what had happened, just that she had insulted someone, even fought them, then said I put her up to it... It may have been someone I hated, but still.

The phone rang again.

This time, I picked up.

"Cass?"
"Yeah, Ness?"
"I'm sorry."
"It's alright, I guess I won't punch you too hard for it."
Cue the laughter from the other end.
"And this is exactly why I said you did it! You're just so damn violent..."
I pouted. "Aw, but you love me all the more because of it..."
"Put that pout away Missy."

I crinkled my brow. "Wait, what? Oh, right." I reached out to open the window, and Ness fell into a heap on the floor. She stood up to brush off the imaginary dust while I hung up.
"Hey Ninja Bitch, how are you?"
"Good, good. And you?"
"About to slap my best friend."
She gasped.
I grinned. "With a pillow."
"Oh, it's on, bitch."

When my mum discovered us a while later, she looked so confused, I genuinely felt sorry for her.
"Nessa? When did you get here? And how did you get here?"
"Oh, a while ago... And you know, through the window..."
My mum gasped theatrically. "You girls will be the death of me, I swear. But as you're here, you might as well stay for dinner." She grinned at our eager faces. "Lasagna."

..-. ..- -.-. -.- / -.-- --- ..-

And then it was back to school. Where I was now known for putting someone up for a fight. Great. I turned to Ness.
"You know Vanessa, I'm still not entirely happy with you. I might have to kick you every time someone says something about this shit."
"Ah, but then Cassandra, you'd have started two fights in four days. Tut, tut. Naughty girl."
"I fucking hate you sometimes Ness."
"I know. But you still love me."
"Nah, not really."
She mock gasped and I snorted.

When I reached my locker, I stopped, while Ness walked on.

"Oh yeah, just abandon me then!" I yelled at her retreating figure, before flipping her off.

She stuck her finger up too, without even looking behind her. Damn, that girl knew me well.

I retrieved my Art coursework from my locker, and turned to walk in the other direction to where Ness went. We had different tutors, which kind of sucked, especially because no one in mine seemed to like me. I wonder why...

I pushed open my tutor door and walked in, sliding into my seat. Just as I remembered who I sat next to. Crap.
He swung round, a smirk on his face.

"Well, look who it is. The ass who broke my friends heart."

"Aw, well who can blame me? Darling, your friend is ea-"

I kicked his chair away before he finished his sentence. He slotted back into his place again and gave me another smirk.

"I would get on the floor before I put you there, darling..."

His only response was a withering look, before the teacher came in, and started calling the register.

Third period was P.E, and I was paired with the one person I was really hoping not to see. Cara. The girl I had supposedly told my best friend to beat up...

.-- . .-.. .-.. --..-- / ... .... .. -

As expected, that didn't go so well. Athletic I may be, but even I couldn't dodge thirty (sorry, twenty nine) balls thrown at me at once, especially when it was by the top P.E set. These girls had fucking deadly aim, even if the majority of them were fussing over broken fingernails by the end.

And to end the day on a high note, as I stepped out the door, I tripped over a foot. MCR still in my ears, I was alright, and not super pissy, so I set about picking up my shit.

"Watch where you're going, you fucking retard."

There was a ripple of laughter. I had been all set to walk away, but now, now it was going down.

"What did you call me?"

And I swear, the looks on their faces... They looked like Loki or Ultron had just landed in front of them, and was about to beat their fucking brains out. Not that there was much to really beat out...

Apart from one. He stood leaning against the wall, cool as you like.

"I called you a retard. What are you, deaf?"

"Oh no honey, I'm your worst nightmare in a pair of Doc Martens."

I completely fucked him up. With one punch. What a weakling. And so I walked away, Teenagers blaring in my ears. It seemed pretty damn ironic.

They're gonna clean up your looks,
With all the lies in the books,
To make a citizen out of you.
'Cos they sleep with a gun,
And keep an eye on you, son,
So they can watch all the things that you do.

And the drugs never work,
They're gonna give you a smirk,
They got methods of keeping you clean.
They're gonna rip off your heads!
Your aspirations to shreds!
Another cog in the murder machine...

They said... All teenagers scare,
The living shit out of me!
They could care less as long as someone'll bleed.
So darken your clothes,
Or strike a vi-o-lent pose,
Maybe they'll leave you alone,
But not me...

You get the picture. The rest of the week went on much like this, and I discovered I had given the kid I punched (Matthew, I think) a black eye. A real shiner. Bastard deserved it though.

Ta-da! First example of the stuff I'm likely to do in this book... Hope you liked it. It was quite fun to write, and I like this character, so I might do more with her at some point. Please give me any feedback you find necessary. Peace out - CranberryJam
