"Tay'sia Simpson wake up" Nia said for the third time in annoyance. We gotta get ready for school and I'm not tryna be late Nia said to her little sister Tay'sia. Don't tell me what to do only my momma can do that, the nine year old snapped back. Your momma? What momma, Nia thought to herself instead of saying out loud. Listen when she's busy I'm in charge, so get up and get ready Tay, Nia said calling her by her nick name slowly walking out the their room. Don't call me Tay only my momma can do that, Tay'sia said yelling at Nia hoping she'd catch what she said. This projects apartment had two bedrooms, one bathroom, a small kitchen, and a living room which hadn't been fully furnished yet. Nia and Tay shared a room and the other room belonged to their mother and occasionally it also belonged to other guests that occupied her time for days on out. Nia walked up to her mothers room door and began to knock. Ma, she said knocking on the door. Me and Tay are about to go to school. Can you hear me Nia yelled by the door, since her mother wasn't responding at all. Nia cracked the door opened and as usual her mother was sleep on the floor beside the bed with a pipe in her left hand and some crack in her right. Nia just shook her head and closed the door, because evidently she couldn't bare to see the reality of her mother being a drug addict strung out on crack. Tay'sia are you dressed, Nia said firmly stating her name letting her know that now she knew that she'd rather be called Tay by their mother and not by her. Yes I'm ready, and I'm bringing my cassette tape too. Nia walked back to the room with her face expression scrunched up. Um, no you're not Tay'sia, put it up somewhere safe and let's go. Well then imma ask momma Tay'sia said with a snappy attitude, speeding pass Nia. Don't open that door Tay'sia, Nia said chasing behind Tay. Momma, can I take my cassette player to school, please. Tay'sia proceeded to touch the door knob until Nia smacked her hand down and pushed her down the hall towards the door.
