Cody had managed to cheer up Sydnee thoroughly, and take her mind a bit off of her father, but when it came time to get off at her stop, Sydnee couldn't get out of her seat.
"Uh... Syd?" Cody waved a hand in front of her face, "Your stop."
"I can't," she whispered, "I seriously can't."
"Why not?" Cody asked her. Sydnee shook her head in answer.
"Where would you go?" he asked her. She shrugged her shoulders. Cody knew something was wrong.
"Come over to my house," he suggested. It was too late for her to get off anyway; the bus had already left her stop. Sydnee turned to look at him.
"I couldn't-" she started, but Cody interrupted her.
"I'm not letting you go anywhere else," he said, "I'd be worried all night. You're gonna come to my house, okay?"
"Your parents," Sydnee said, "Wouldn't they mind?"
"No," Cody said, "I'll talk my mom into letting you stay."
"Cody..." Sydnee's voice trailed off.
"Come on, my stop's next," Cody said, "You can come with me. It's not that far of a walk, and you can probably borrow some of my clothes for the night."
"Thank you," Sydnee said. Cody gave her a smile and they got off at his stop. She realised Cody lived in a quiet neighbourhood, which she hadn't expected.
They were surrounded by green grass, clean sidewalks, some houses even had tended gardens. Cody grabbed her hand and led her a few blocks, and when they got to his house, she was surpised. It was a regular, two-floor home with green grass like the rest of the house, but one of the windows on the top was covered in different band logos.
Sydnee pointed to it, "I'll assume that's your room?"
Cody just grinned and led her into the house, telling her that his mother wouldn't be home for an hour or two.
"What about your uh... dad?" she asked shyly.
"Oh," Cody stopped walking, "Uhm, well my parents divorced."
Sydnee suddenly felt stupid for having brought it up, why did she ask?
"I'm sorry," she said.
"No big deal," Cody said, "Come on, I'll show you my room."
Sydnee not only got a tour of Cody's room, but also the rest of the house. She hadn't expected such a nice house, but she didn't what she should have expected. It was a moderate size, enough for a regular family. Cody gave her some of his clothes - a plain t-shirt and some plaid pajamas, which she didn't change into until later that night.
"Honey! You home?" a woman's voice floated through the house, while Cody and Sydnee were listening to some music in his room.
"In my room, mom!" Cody yelled. Sydnee didn't know why, but she loved when Cody talked. He had a deep voice, but it fit his demeanor. He wasn't scrawny but he wasn't buff; he was actually 6'2, a few inches taller than Sydnee herself.
After a few seconds though, a woman with features similar to Cody appeared. She gave them both a smile.
"I didn't know you had a friend over, Codes," the woman said, "I'm Amy, Cody's mom."
"Sydnee," Sydnee replied shyly, and gave a tight smile, "Nice to meet you, ma'am."
"Oh please, call me Amy," she replied, "I'm not that old, hun."
Sydnee laughed a bit, "Sorry."
Amy explained that she was gonna go get started on dinner, and she'd be in the kitchen if they needed her. Cody ran after his mother soon as she exited the door, promising to be back in a few minutes.
