"hello?" the girl politely asked after bringing the phone receiver to her ear. y/n l/n was just about to leave to catch her flight back to hawkins, indiana. she had been saving up to go back to see her friends ever since she moved away in the summer of 1982.

though she was closer in age with nancy wheeler and jonathan byers, y/n tended to gravitate towards the younger kids and ended up much closer with them.

"y/n, hey! are you still coming to hawkins?" the familiar voice of mike wheeler rang through the phone. he sounded much older than he did the last time y/n had seen him, but his voice sounded slightly nervous, even though he was trying to conceal it as much as he could.

"wheeler! i was actually just about to leave to catch my flight. why, what's up?" y/n spoke, pulling a granola bar out of her back pocket so she could eat something before her flight.

the wheeler boy hesitated on the other end of the line, not wanting to say this to one of his oldest friends, but also not wanting to put the girl in danger. "is there any way you could cancel your flight?" he blurted out into the phone.

silence followed from the girls end, confusion washed over her. "i don't think so. you trying to get rid of me or something?" she chuckled playfully, trying to joke around with the boy.

"no!" the dark haired boy quickly responded. "no, not at all! there's just... there's something really important going on right now and," he trailed off, trying to think of a good excuse. "and it's just a really bad time for us right now."

"well maybe i can help? i've been told i'm really good with advice." y/n said, the smile on her face present in her voice. she had been waiting for this for too long, and she wasn't going to cancel right before she left for her flight.

"y/n, it would just be better if you didn't come." mike regretfully said.

"listen, wheeler. i've been saving up for this flight since i moved away, i'm not about to cancel this as soon as i can afford it. the tickets are already bought —and non-refundable, might i add— and i cant afford to just not use them." the h/c girl expressed. "i have to go so i can catch my flight. you guys still better be picking me up at the airport." she said, placing the phone back on the receiver before rushing out her front door.

mike, however, heard the dial tone and nervously looked over at his friends sitting on his couch. they really wished they didn't need to drag their childhood best friend into this, but it didn't seem like they had a choice at this point. if y/n was staying in mikes basement during her trip to hawkins, she was going to find out what was going on in the group eventually.

y/n walked out of her terminal, exhausted and extremely bored after her long flight, to her best friends she hadn't seen in over 5 years with two new girls with them. "hey!" she exclaimed, walking over to them. "wheeler, henderson, byers, sinclair! look at you guys!" she joyfully said, with a huge smile on her face while she hugged all of them. "jesus, you guys are grown."

the four of them originally had nervous smiles across their faces, but they quickly wiped away after seeing their friend for the first time in what felt like forever. each of them greeted her in their own ways, a few of them giving her little gifts.

"you guys must be el and max! i've heard so much about you guys." y/n turned to the girls, standing there awkwardly while their friends had a reunion. she didn't hesitate to pull them both in for a hug, to which they awkwardly accepted. "i'm y/n, i was friends with these idiots," she said gesturing to the boys standing next to them, "quite a few years ago now. it's nice to know they've finally started hanging around with some chicks for a change." she chuckled.

"it's really nice to meet you." max politely said to the older girl standing in front of her.

"so how did you guys get here?" y/n asked, knowing none of them were old enough to have their full license yet. that's when she heard a voice boom through the airport.

"wheeler!" it said, and all the kids snapped their heads to where it was coming from. "you guys ready to go, or what? i didn't buy us much time on the parking meter."

y/n looked past the kids shoulders to see a pale man with long brown hair strutting towards them as he got looks from those around him. he wore black jeans with rips in the knees, a w.a.s.p. shirt, and a leather jacket with a denim vest, decorated with patches and pins, overtop.

he was definitely a skid, but y/n was too. and man, was he attractive.

the man stopped in front of y/n, looking her up and down with a slight smirk on his face. "who's this?" he slyly asked.

"i'm y/n." she smirked at him, holding out a hand for him to shake.

"eddie." the long haired man simply stated, taking her hand in his. both of them held their eye contact, as the younger kids around them awkwardly shuffled their feet, waiting to go back to the wheeler house.

lucas awkwardly clearing his throat snapped them out of whatever trance they were in, both of them quickly looking away from each other. y/n tried to think of something to say to him to lose the awkwardness and to keep the conversation going, but all she could think of were his gorgeous dark brown eyes.

they all walked in silence through the airport, before y/n quickly asked, "so how do you know the kids?"
