AYOOLA'S POVI stared out the balcony of the hotel room I had lodged. I held unto the letter in my hand like my life depended on it, my life did depend on it. My phone rang again and I wish I had switched it off. I had lied to Bimpe and Ina-ayomi that I was going on a business trip this week, though I was aware Sola and her children would be arriving that week. I should be there for them, it's not Bimpe's fault she fell in love with someone like Wande. That woman went through hell even after Wande left them all alone especially the little girl who spent years waiting for him at their favorite spot.
I never expected Wande to return after all he said about Bimpe. We had fought times without numbers concerning the issue, he lied to me every time I asked about Sola. He would always say "AY nothing they there." I felt sorry for him because he lost a wonderful woman. Wande had told me once that he wasn't sure those kids were his but I know Wande will never leave Sola because her family was wealthy. Sola's father handed over one out of his companies to Wande after he agreed to marry Sola. Shortly after Wande's father died his lawyer had revealed that the man was drowning in debt before he passed. Wande sold the business and invested it into the one his father-in law gifted him. Every now and then he receives money from the man and if I knew wande very well then, he would never leave Sola even if she were to bore children for their servants.
The phone rang again and I went to check the caller before putting the phone away. "doctor Ayeni" I watched the phone ring a little more before picking.
"yes doctor?" I greeted hoping it was good news.
"Ayoola I have sent your results to your email; you need to see me"
"yes sir, I would come in as soon as I can."
"Ayoolaaaaa... I meant immediately." I nodded again but this time to myself before cutting the line off.
DR Ayeni has been my doctor since my teenage years and was also like a father to me. I checked the results and I realized everything was not going to be fine. I had to get home today. The moment I dropped my phone it began to ring again.
"Hello Ina-ayo"
"Hello uncle Ayo please when are you coming back?"
"Is everything alright?" I noticed everywhere was silent at the background. "where are you?"
"I'm in my room uncle Ayo, it doesn't feel like home anymore. Mother won't even speak to me or see me." I heaved a sigh "uncle Ayo?"
"yes dear?"
"Am I the reason why mother is unhappy?"
"No dear why would you think such a thing. It's grown up stuff."
"because I wished for father to return and he's been making mother sad." I heard a sniff.
"I got you a teddy bear." I said trying to cheer her up
"Really? Is it blue and has white stripes?" I laughed.
"yes, it is blue and has white stripes."
We ended the call after I assured her nothing was her fault. I couldn't tell her it was her father's fault but I knew whose fault it was.
I parked my car in front of Bimpe's gate but stayed seated in the car. I had to compose myself before I walked into the house. I was going to take Wande for a walk, maybe if he saw places, he used to go he would feel better and maybe that might help his memory. I really needed him to regain his memory.
I got out of the car and walked into the compound and I was immediately engulfed in a hug by Ina-ayomi, she is so precious. I held out the package so she could have it and she immediately screamed.
"uncle Ayo thank you...you are the best."
"am I now?" she nodded her head smiling.
"where is your mother?"
"she went out with Gbenga's mother." I nodded my head.
"and your father?" I saw her face change but she quickly switched.
"he is inside with aunty Sola."
I walked inside and greeted Sola who in returned greeted me with her silence. I sometimes wonder how Wande picked her over Bimpe.
"I would like to take wande for a stroll."
"sure! Why not." She walked away giving me a rude look which only made me laugh.
"c'mon Wande."
I took him to his secret spot. The one he always went to with his daughter. He seemed to feel at ease because he looked less pale as his eyes would not leave the woman frying Akara across the streets.
"this place feels nice, have I been here before?"
"almost every week while you were here. You came here with your daughter."
"I feel like I've made a grave mistake in my life even though I don't know what it is, it still leaves this terrible feeling."
"maybe because you have. Wande I am sick and I need you to regain your memory because I don't know if I can be here while trying to get better. You need to be strong for your family."
"but who is my family? Sade or Bimpe?"
"only you know the answers to that. Try to get better."
We both sat there for a while before I led the way back to drop Wande. Bimpe had gotten home by the time we got back. She was trying to get dinner ready.
"Bimpe, can I see you?"
"is everything okay? You don't look so good." I gave her the test results and watched as her face turned pale. "you are going to be fine." I nodded not trusting my voice.
"please can you do me a favor? Keep this away from Ina-ayomi. I don't want her worrying about any of this." She nodded.
I knew she was in pain and I just added to her pain but I can't keep lying to her especially when I would be getting treatment soon and anything can happen.
