Eden walked up to her Aunts house letting herself in the front door, calling out but finding no one home, so she made herself comfortable on the front porch after grabbing a snack from the fridge. It was a nice day and Eden was determined to soak in all the sun possible. The sound of a motorcycle approaching confused Eden until she saw her aunt on the back of the bike holding tightly to the man she recognized as Maverick. She couldn't help but smile at seeing her aunt so happy. Penny had a difficult time after her husband left her and Amelia, and Eden knew that Penny always held a soft spot for the pilot.

"Hey Aunt Penny, didn't you tell me that motorcycles were death traps and that I wasn't supposed to go riding around with boys on bikes?"

Maverick smile widely at Penny who looked a little flustered.

"Well Eddie, do as I say and not as I do," she said flattening her hair down. "Besides I've been right about boys on bikes being bad news in the past."

Maverick's smile faltered a little.

"Your aunt has been telling me that you're friends with one of my pilots. Bob is a good kid," he said turning to address Eden.

"So people keep saying," Eden said quietly.

Penny and Maverick both raised an eyebrow at Eden but chose to ignore the statement.

"You're young," he said as if just realizing this, "what do you like to do to blow off steam and get together with your friends? Something that's not drinking at the Hard Deck."

"I guess going to the beach? Maybe doing some surfing or throwing the frisbee around?" she offered.

He thought this over, nodding as he mumbled quietly to himself.

"Hmm frisbee. Thanks Eden, you've given me a great idea."

"You're welcome?" Eden said still confused. Maverick started his bike up to leave so Eden stepped away to give her aunt a moment of privacy with him. Her aunt caught up to her on the front porch grabbing a handful of m&ms that Eden had brought out to eat.

"I came by to see Amelia but she doesn't seem to be home," Eden said.

"Oh yeah she's out with some friends studying for a pop quiz tomorrow. I don't think she'll be back for a while."

"All good, something far more interesting's come up. What's going on with you and Maverick again?"

"Nothing is going on, and please don't tell Amelia."

"If there's nothing going on there's nothing to tell," Eden said raising an eyebrow.

"I miss when you were a baby and couldn't speak."

"Aunt Penny!" Eden said throwing an m&m at her aunt. "I was just going to say you look happy, and you deserve to be happy."

"We'll see if it lasts. It never seems to." Penny trailed off and stared out the window lost in thought, but she quickly shook her head and refocused. "So your mom tells me you're bringing Bob to family supper tomorrow. What's going on there?"

"Nothing, he's just a friend."

"Sure sure, I've had 'just friends' before."

"No seriously we are just friends. I know he's not interested so we're keeping it strictly platonic."

"Okay... Sure. You forget I work with you. I've seen you guys together at the Hard Deck, you're pretty obviously in love with each other."

"I think you're going blind in your old age Aunt Penny."

Eden started laughing at Penny's offended look and ran as her aunt grabbed the spray nozzle on the kitchen sink and pointed it at her.

After agreeing to help Penny cook supper as a peace offering, Eden grabbed her phone out of her pocket to text Bob.

'Want me to pick you up from the base tomorrow for supper?'

She received a response within seconds.

'Actually we just got told we'll be at the beach tomorrow. Want to meet me there?'

'Sure. I've been meaning to get out surfing sometimes anyways. I'll come early and we can head out whenever you're done.'

'Great. It's a date.'

Eden slammed down her phone onto the counter making her aunt jump in the process. She cursed the stupid butterflies in her stomach that started to flutter around after reading Bob's text.

Eden pulled up to the beach the next day, grabbing her surf board and wetsuit, before heading to the beach. It took no time to see where the Top Gun students were. A dozen ripped, sweaty, shiny men and women cheering and yelling as they played football were pretty hard to miss. She  saw Penny sitting out of the beach staring at Maverick as he ran down the beach.

"Enjoying the view?" she asked. Penny whipped her head around, cheeks slightly red at being caught staring.

"Aren't you?"

Eden looked back to the group of people playing football, considering the question for a moment. She spotted Bob in his yellow shirt making a particularly good catch and couldn't help but agree. Maverick split from the group moving closer to the women to grab his shirt and relax in the sand. Eden looked down at Penny who was waving at Maverick with a goofy grin on her face and decided to do something about it. She walked up to Maverick despite Penny's protests.

"You look like you could use a beer Maverick," she said once she was close enough that he could hear her. "Penny's got some in her fridge. I'm sure she'd share if you asked."

Maverick looked up at Eden, then back to Penny.

"You know what, that sounds like a good idea."

Eden smiled to herself as he joined Penny at the table. She waved to Bob as she passed causing him to get tackled by Phoenix while he was distracted. She laughed and ran out into the water.

She hadn't been out in the water for long when she heard Bob calling her name from the beach.

"I can't hear you," she called back, "you'll have to come out here!"

She watched as he dropped his hands in defeat, then taking a look around as if someone would come to help him, began wading into the water.
