It was my first day at my new intern job. My first day to realize that I would need a lot of skills to save people, and the ability to think outside the box.
I didn't have my own car yet so my mom had to drive me to the Seattle Grace Hospital. "You sure you're alright dear? I could just bring you home and say that you were sick. I don't want you to mess up on your first day".
I rolled my eyes. "Yes mom. I'm not going to start a day behind all of these doctors. I'm going to work hard just like the rest of them to get to where I need to be. So I'm not backing down now".
My mom took a deep breath and looked out the windshield and into the hospital doors. "I know, just let me know if you're going to stay late because they need you. I love you".
I gave her a reassuring smile. "I love you too mom". And with that I hopped out of the car and looked at what my obstacle was in front of me. I wasn't going to let this hospital pull me down. I was going to hold it up and that was that.
I entered the hospital nervously. I pushed my glasses back onto my face, a nervous habit, and I looked around. It was quite calm. It could just be because the new load of interns are just entering so they don't want us to mess up already. I looked at my stack of papers that I was carrying in my hands. It included my résumé, my college works along with my college classes and certificates.
I walked around the corner and entered an office full of what I guessed was the other interns. I looked around and saw that all of them looked just like me. We were practically babies compared to everyone else. I mean we weren't even dressed in long white coats and scrubs. I was quickly pulled out of my thoughts when the chief walked in.
"Hello everybody. We're glad to welcome you to Seattle Grace Hospital where you will be spending the next 4 years of internship and then possibly next 4 years of residency. Here you will work along side the attendings and residents. You will work in labs and the ER. You will also be allowed to work in the operating rooms if you show skills that are needed. I will keep in touch with all my attendings and keep your progress. You will basically have your own chart just like a patient."
As he continued talking, I noticed a doctor step in. Late. He probably had patients but I couldn't help but notice. His eyes were the color of green ice and his tired face looked so young. He was beautiful.
"I hope you guys enjoy your first day. You will be put on to very hard cases and I hope you're willing to work. I am Owen Hunt, chief of surgery. Thank you"
I snapped my head back around looking back and he was clapping. His hands looked very delicate. He may be a plastic surgeon.
He started walking towards the chief and I quickly pushed my glasses back up the bridge of my nose. Just my nervous habit. He had a smile that lit up the whole room. He approached Cheif Hunt and started talking to him about his patients I'm guessing.
"The patient in bed A is perfectly fine. She had a few glass shards in her arm and the gash on her right wrist has been graphed and all set. I'll do a post-op on her later and she'll be able to be discharged."
His voice was so smooth.
"Nice work Dr. Avery. Keep it up. We'll need those beds later for any incoming trauma."
The chief patted him on the back and left. So, he was an Avery. His mom is one of the top surgeons and leads an outstanding foundation. No wonder he's perfect!
The rest of the room was filing out now and I quickly packed up my belongings and left the office. I took one last look behind me and that is the first time when I made contact with Dr. Jackson Avery.
