         ——————————— punk tactics.

1986 the year nicholas byers had to stop making excuses for himself, the year he needed to stay behind and look out for his friends, not run off to fight someone who he was clearly no match for, at least not emotionally. granted he had tried to escape hawkins a couple of times after his mother as well as brothers had told him to stay put if he really didn't want to leave his friends behind.

on his first attempt, nancy brought him back.

second attempt at an escape from town, dustin informed steve. nicholas then went on to call him a snitch for the next month or so.

it wasn't easy, being torn between family and friends, the whole reason he came back to hawkins in the first place was because of his family, because of will, he was terrified of the fact that he could be thousands of miles away, no care for anything or anyone, while at the same time he could unknowingly be losing his little brother again. as much as he hated to admit it, even to himself, he wasn't built for that, for the damage that it inflicted on him the first time around.

nicholas was a sensitive person, other people's opinions always eating away at him, the way they would stare drove him to the point of insanity most days. but he'd forgotten that it was because they were afraid. afraid of him.

they feared him due to his lack of understanding, though he very well knew what he was doing, all the time. he just didn't care. it was like he had an on switch, one wrong move, one wrong word, you were done for just like that.

and so, when you mix sensitivity and anger, it creates a nightmare for those around this walking combination of emotions. he'd often been nicknamed the 'byers child that went wrong' for those very reasons.

he always hated that these traits he had acquired through his early years of childhood, jonathan didn't possess them, will didn't either, and they certainly didn't stem from joyce. having been the first born, he was almost just like his father, or so he'd been told. in moments of anger it would often come from joyce, even jonathan, and from what he could remember, once from will.

"you're just like your father"

words like those would send him into an unforeseen fit on anger, he would do no harm to those around him but everything blurred together in such moments, he would see nothing but red.

a couple of months prior, nicholas had watched his family leave for the airport, dustin at his side, almost awaiting any sort of impact the soon as the words 'another byers bites the dust' escaped past his lips. and the back of nicholas' hand did in fact flick the back of dustin's head, unleveling his cap.

"none of us are dead, dustin" he stated, arms crossed over his chest in an instant, a feeling of melancholy rushing over him the moment he could no longer see them. "it's for the best anyway"
