"Liam, slow down!" I order as we speed along the highway. The windows are rolled down halfway, the cool summer breeze proliferating throughout the vehicle. It's nighttime, and my eyes are struggling to perceive the blurry surroundings as we pass them.

Liam laughs, "It's okay, babe. There's no one around." He places a reassuring hand on my thigh and rubs it lightly with his thumb. I sigh, resting my elbow on the door, my head on my hand.

The next thing I know, there are flashing lights approaching behind us and we're slowing down and pulling over. I shoot Liam a death glare, "You should've listened to me." He only rolls his eyes. He rolls down the window and the officer points a beam of light directly into our faces.

"In a hurry?" the policeman scoffs, hand on his belt, revealing his weapon.

"No sir, just...didn't really know what the speed limit was. I'm incredibly sorry," Liam says shakily in his accent. By this point my palms are slippery; I'm so nervous.

"Oh yeah? Couldn't see all the speed limit signs posted everywhere? Look kid, just because you think you're from a different country, doesn't mean you don't have to abide by our laws," states the officer tensely.

"Yes sir, of course," Liam agrees.

"Now who's this?" he questions while he points the flashlight at me. I squint, trying not to look like I'm about to throw up.

"My girlfriend," he declares. I don't know if I should say anything, so I just nod and give a small smile. The officer furrows his brow a bit, but doesn't pursue any more inquiries about our relationship.

"Alright...I'm gonna need to see your license and registration, kid," says the officer with less gruff in his voice. Liam complies and opens the glove compartment to fish out the registration. A small plastic bag catches my attention, and my eyes widen. Apparently it catches the officer's attention too.

"Son, I'm gonna need you to step out of the vehicle. Your girlfriend too," he demands. We hesitantly exit the car while he reaches into the glove compartment and fishes out a tiny plastic bag filled with a white powder. Judging the evidence, one can only assume the worst.

The rest of the events are as blurry as the stars were, speeding along down the freeway that night.

I'm sitting in the lobby of the police station in a city I'm not entirely familiar with. The metal seat is cold underneath the bare skin on my thighs. All of the factors of this night contribute to my unceasing shivering that started up once I got out of Liam's car.

The officer from before steps into the lobby. "Alright, you can go see him," he states sternly.

I dash to where they're keeping him. He looks so out of place, sitting sadly behind huge metal bars, his head and shoulders drooping against the cinderblock wall. I walk up to the bars and he looks up, giving me a sad smile. It's all so heart-wrenching, but then I remember what got him into that room in the first place and my sympathy flies out the door.

"What the fuck, Liam?" I hiss. "Can you please explain to me why the fuck you had cocaine in your car? And why the fuck you were driving around with it?" I was fuming, I couldn't hold back, I could literally kill him right now.

"Please, babe, keep your voice down," whispers Liam as he places his fingers on the bars and touches me lightly. "I'll explain it to you later, just help me get out of here, okay?"
