"You want me to tell you why I don't like purple skies?"
"Sure," the man to your left turns to look at you. His eyes are like glass; silver and sparkly. His hair flows down his back in waves, softer then rays of light. He smiles, eyes mirroring the shape of the crescent moon above.
You both sit on the edge of the wall, rocking your feet back and forth like a child, idly watching the sun as it sets. It's not purple, its a light pink. You can make out the few stars that shine. However, you know the sunset enough to know you won't be seeing the darkness after the clock passes midnight. You'll be seeing light grey. A lavender color, mixed with sky blue, and white.
"Because its yet another product of us. Another reminder of the damage people do to the world, with no regard for anything other than their own short term happiness. The lights that make a city so beautiful, so bright, reflect in the night sky." you turn to look at the man, who's no longer turned to you with a smile, but instead staring at the sky in wonder.
This is his listening look, you realize.
You continue.
"This purple is not natural. This purple is something we have done to the sky. And as a result, we can no longer see what beauty lies beyond. The stars," you point upwards, rather dramatically, looking up at him to make sure he's following.
"The stars and a pitch black sky. This disrupts so much more than the natural pattern of wildlife- it deprives us of the comfort of darkness," you mumble, leaning back on your hands to look upwards.
He smiles.
"I understand. Sky pollution? You know a lot about this," he laughs, bubbly, like tinkling bells.
You don't want to admit it, but you envy his ability to be so carefree, when you yourself feel so tense. Wound up like a yoyo, energy stagnant, waiting patiently for release.
"Yeah. I just like skies, I guess. There's so much in this universe," a sigh escapes you turn to sit crisscrossed on the ledge, turning to Jimin when he suddenly hums, clearly thinking about something.
"Y/n."
"Hm?"
"You want to see complete darkness one day, don't you? Just emptiness."
You smile, throwing your head back towards the night above you.
"I want to float in darkness."
It's quiet for a moment, but the air is not tense. It's strangely open. It's nice being able to say it.
"And how do you suppose you do that?" the man questions, but you're sure he knows what you mean.
You look up at the sunset that's slowly fading. It bleeds out of the sky.
Lavender
Then, you stand up, walking along the top of the wall with ease and sitting on the other side, towards the city. It's filled with color, stark contrast to the empty plains you were staring at before.
He walks over to where you sit but chooses to stand and look out at the landscape. You don't answer his question, leaving room for the silence to sit between you. Beside yourself you can hear tinkling bells. You turn towards his laugh with a frown.
"You're just like him," Jimin sing-songs.
"Him?"
"Him."
You sit, and then the silence resumes, slowly filling with the sounds of a bright city night. Laughter and cars, loud rap music and bass that thunders the streets, the sound of engines revving and club parties along blocked off streets. The sound of drunks stumbling, lifting their toasts into the air, the sound of happiness. Short term happiness. And then the sun comes, and the cycle comes again, and again, and again.
