Chapter one: The Beginning
April 27th 3024
Isn't this day supposed to be every girls dream nowadays? Getting all dressed up to go to the Gala and be seized up by every man in the building. All the dumbass professors say it's a turning stone to turn us from children to adults. I think it's pathetic. I mean, you are just going to become what my ancestors called a housewife. We call them Manni's now.
I read up about their time, when they were young they had so much music. Like these bands called, One Direction. I kind of like they're music, but I never really get a chance to hear it. I've listened to bands like All Time Low and a band called, um, what was it 4 Seconds Of Autumn? No that's not it. 2 Minutes Of Winter? Nope. Definitely not.5 SECONDS OF SUMMER!!!!!!!! That's them. I jumped when I remembered the name of the band my Nanny plays on loop whilst dancing as if she doesn't have a broken hip. She won't let the doctors put the mechanical one in. I can see why, I could never trust those men.
"SKYLER HARROSWAY (side note, it's pronounced 'Hariss-way') I've just pricked my finger on your hair pins. This wouldn't have happened if you let the curlsmaster-30000 do it, and look, at that. LOOK AT IT! It's bleeding thanks to you." Yelled my mum, disturbing my inner monologue. Rude.
Anyways, I've never trusted them. All the so called doctors wear a white mask with the words 'silence is golden' printed on them, and when they talk, it's all the same tone, different voice sounds of course, but very dreary.
By now you're probably wondering what the Gala is. And if you don't care, join the club. But for all the confused readers, I kinda have to explain. Sorry. The Gala is a ball, but unlike most Balls the government organises, this doesn't end with everyone going home with their respected companion. This is different.
This is a game.
There are 36 eligible bachelors, and 47 eligible girls, all 18 to 20 years. At the end of the night, the chosen 36 will be taken to a room, leaving the remaining 11 to be evacuated out of the city to work in the laundries. The 36 will then be told who chose them, and after that it's history, no one really knows what happens to them until their ceremony.
The ceremony is when, after 5 months, the man officially claims the woman as his, no fancy ring or flamboyant walkway like in my grandparents days. He signs a paper, done. He owns her.Now you may be wondering, they have kids, how does no one know about what happens before and after the ceremony. But hold up a goddamn minute, I said no one REALLY knows what happens.
I'll break it down for you. He owns her, she gets pregnant, they have kids, and if the kids a boy, he stays and becomes an heir (did I forget to mention the bachelors are royal?) But if it's a girl, she's sent straight on the next hovercart to the laundries, to be raised by the women that were never chosen. I did the calculations and my Grandma's supposed to be 82, Mum, 41 and I already know I'm 19.
And yes, I know I did say my nanny dances to 5 Seconds Of Summer, even though they were big in 2010 to 3059 and its 4124 now, but this is my installation Nanny and Mum, real people, I swear. But everything nowadays has got a robotic term for it. But they're oy young. Anna (mum) is only 30 and Deirdre (nan) is only 50, when I said about Grandmas 81 and Mum is 42, I meant biologically.
Off in the distance, I heard a horn blowing.
"Its time Skyler." Anna told me.
And with that, I was boarded onto the next hovercart, the same one I was placed on 19 years ago, and set off.
I was about to become an object to a man.
