Lindsey stepped out of the elevator on to the floor the band had booked out. They were in Texas and had just got back from the restaurant where they'd spent their night off.
Stevie hadn't joined them. She was almost 20 weeks along now, and by some miracle had managed to keep the pregnancy a secret from the public. Everyone involved in the show knew, of course, but her savvy dressing and the clever stage lighting of the show meant so long as she didn't turn sideways with the lights up no one was any the wiser. It was funny to watch her miraculously appear and disappear behind her mic between numbers but no one seemed to give it a second thought.
The rest of the band and crew were down in the hotel bar. Lindsey had been avoiding drinking too heavily in case she needed him at any time, and had decided to check in on her.
They had been flying back to LA from wherever they were every week for appointments; it was exhausting but worth it to hear that the twins were both doing well - the smaller of the two was still a cause for concern but a real fighter. Stevie could feel them both moving now, one definitely more than the other but she was sure to get a comforting nudge from time to time to let her know everything was ok.
As he walked into the hallway he smiled at the figure further ahead, slowly swaying along.
"Hey, what have I told you about smuggling footballs up your shirt?!"
She turned and smiled at him. That pregnancy glow had well and truly kicked in now. She looked tired but happy, hair piled up on her head, no make up, in a cami and pj bottoms. She reached up to wrap her arms around his neck as he met her, placing his hands on her belly before wrapping them round her back and kissing her forehead.
There was still a question mark over the status of their relationship. He had broken things off with Kristen, the girl he'd been seeing, weeks ago. It was a dead end relationship anyway. Stevie hadn't passed comment but he knew she was pleased about it. At the least it meant he would have more time to focus on the babies. Other than that, the lines were still blurred. They'd shared a few nights cuddling and kissing, right up until the moment Stevie would declare she was too hot and kick him out the bed.
Sex was out of the question. There had definitely been times where they'd both wanted to, but Dr Fairbanks advised against it under the circumstances. Once night she surprised him by giving head but they both ached for more afterwards and decided to avoid it in future for that reason.
She did look great though. As he held her, he kissed her neck and felt her now enormous breasts swell against him.
"What're you doing out here?" He mumbled against her soft skin.
"Walking. Thinking. The only time I can." He did feel bad that she had become some kind of recluse. He didn't want to put any pressure on her to announce the pregnancy but there would come a time, very soon, when the wrong person would find out and that would be that. Better for her to control the thing, he thought. But she just wasn't ready. "Walk with me?"
"Sure." She hooked her arm in his and they began to wander along the abandoned hall. "What have you been thinking about?"
"The future. Short and long term. I'm glad you're here actually, there's some things I want to run by you."
"Hit me."
"Well, I was hoping to wait until the end of the tour to announce it but I don't think I'll last that long without someone seeing. I know you think the same. I think after my appointment this week, the official halfway point, I'll do it then. Probably just a press release. I know there will be a fuss and I'm more prepared now for the backlash."
"Backlash? You've done nothing wrong."
"No but - well it's weird isn't it? I mean, I think it's weird and I'm the one in this situation. I'll be the only mom on the school run who remembers JFK getting shot."
