I woke up bright and early the next morning to the smell of bacon and eggs and.....Coffee! Oh yes it's coffee, my one true addiction. I used to get up early every morning to put on a pot coffee for dad and myself before school. It was the only thing that got me through freshman year.
"Ya want some breakfast?" My mother asked happily. "Yes please I'm starving" I replied. I chicken pecked at my dinner last night, I didn't have the heart to tell her I hate Tuna, especially in casserole form. "There's plates in the cupboard, and the silverware is in the drawer, under the sink." "K, thanks mom." "Mom" she said, "oh how long I have waited to hear that." "I'm here now mom, guess you'll be hearin it for a while," I said. Giving her a small smile. She smiled back at me as she picked up the brown leather jacket that was on the back of her chair. "Unfortunately, I have to go to work" she said solemnly. "But I'll call and check in on you every little bit to make sure your okay." "Okay mom, thanks" I said as she shuffled out the door. I finished my bacon and eggs and poured myself a thermos of coffee. (Just because she doesn't want me to go out doesn't mean I won't) I thought to myself. I dug through my closet until I found my blue navy jacket with the waterproof liner (Because it's raining outside). I dug out my cowgirl boots (that were expectantly buried in the bottom of the duffel bag). "I'm ready for this" I told myself as I slowly peeked out the crack in the door. All I could see was cabins and large white tents and a few picnic tables dripping from the rain. I stepped out the door cautiously watching to make sure no one saw me.... And that's when I saw him, sneaking around the corner of the cabin below mine. He ran around the side of the cabin and looked around to make sure no one was following him. He had to have been one of the "Delinquents" that goes here. He ran up into the woods as if he were gonna escape, but we all know that there's a large metal fence surrounding the camp with electric razor wire around the top of it. He can't escape. "I wonder where he's going" I say out loud. I have my thermos clipped to my belt so that I don't have to carry it. (I was gonna explore the camp today but this is kind of interesting) I slowly start towards the woods hoping to see what he's doing when someone grabbed me from behind. "Mom!" I exclaimed. "Emma!" "What are you doing out here!?". " I uh, thought I seen a rabbit, I was making sure". "Go back inside", she said. "I have to go back to work and I don't want you out here wondering around". Okay I said as I walked slowly back into the cabin. I couldn't help but look back at the woods where the guy disappeared.
The rest of the day I spent in my room, unpacking the duffel and a few things I hadn't put away yesterday while listening to my favorite radio station "96.9 WXBQ".( The best country music station ever). As I was folding the last few items of clothes I heard a noise. It sounded like something on the roof outside my window." A raccoon" I thought to misled as I looked around for a flashlight since it was getting dark, but to no avail. I quickly grabbed my phone remembering the flashlight it has.I shined it out my window and saw nothing but... raisins? ( oh wait those aren't raisins) I thought to myself. Yep, there was a raccoon on the roof. I swept away his little " presents" he left on my banister and snuck downstairs to find something raccoon worthy to leave out there for him to eat. I settled on a pack of corn nuts and quickly walked back up to my room, hoping he was still near by. I sprinkled a few nuts on the banister and closed the doors back, Making sure to lock them.
The next morning I woke up, expecting to smell bacon again but I smelled something much sweeter. (Pancakes or Waffles?) I thought to myself as I walked down the stairs still in my pajamas.' Oh crap'! I said when I saw the man at the door. I ran back upstairs and got dressed. "Who was that man/" I said when I came back down stairs. "One of the camp councilors" my mom replied. "He was telling me that someone or something has been stealing bags of corn nuts from the mess hall." "It was probably a raccoon" I said. 'There was one on the roof outside my window last night, I know because it left a little "present" for me outside my window". "Haha, okay then, i'll let the know to lock them up at night", she said. I walked to the fridge and looked for the milk so that I could have some with my waffles(chocolate chip ones I might add). "Eat up", my mom said. " I gotta get to work, Charles, the counselor that was just here wants me to come inspect a few of the cabins" ."Okay mom" I replied. To busy munching on waffles to really pay attention. As soon as she walked out the door I jumped up and ran upstairs. I threw in my denim jacket and hiking boots." Now to figure out where he went" I said to myself as I snuck out the back door.
I walked down to the cabin the boy was sneaking around yesterday and found a comfortable hiding spot to wait for him. "What am I doing here" I asked myself, he might not even come back today. Just then I heard something. It sounded like someone walking beside the cabin. I froze. I scooted up under the table I was setting beside, just out of view of anyone who might walk by. Just then someone ran by the table up towards the woods. It was him, it was the boy! I waited until he was just far enough away so that he couldn't hear me and ran up into the woods after him. I could see him just ahead, 100 yards or so. Suddenly he disappeared behind a large rock near the hillside. I slowly walked up and peeked around the edge of the rock and.... "Hey!, who are you and why are you following me!?". He was tall, a lot bigger than me, he could beat me to a pulp right now and no one would know where I was. This is it, this is how ill die. This is what mom was afraid of. I'm gonna die, in the woods, alone, with a maple syrup stain on my shirt.
