YEAR CITY STREETS - NIGHT
Rows of houses line the streets of an upscale neighborhood. The windshields of a few cars have been blacked out. Many cars are parked on the curb, some blocks away. a breeze picks up. a girl sits on the sidewalk reading a book, her back to us, staring up at the street. Her eyes are closed. Her mouth hangs open a bit, partially straining to speak. As the breeze moves closer, the girl's mouth opens and she seems to whisper to a phone:
GIRL
Mister? Mister? Mister?k-k-k-k-k-k-
(stops, opens her mouth) Hurry up.
The girl stands back up, gently peeling a wad of empty paper from her mouth. But she's still staring back up at the street. Now her face narrows and her eyes become that of a terrified child. The breeze moves past her. On the street behind her, a young man now steps out of a dark sedan and looks over at the girl, realizing she's in danger. The man lights a cigarette with a yellow tip and walks over, cranking his window all the way down. He stands directly over the girl, his legs straddling the blacked-out cars. He says:
MAN
You got a cigarette for us, sweetheart?GIRL
Yeah, i got one.MAN
You sure? The man looks over at the sedan, then back at the girl.
He takes a drag on his cigarette and exhales. He gestures to the driver. He holds out his arm and approaches towards the girl. They shake hands. The man presses
his chest against the girl's arms as he reaches for a gun. He removes it, then holds the gun with both hands and closes his eyes.
He lets out a sharp, loud breath. The girl breathes quickly and groans as if she was frightened. She closes her eyes, then opens them. The man look up at the street.
he aims and pulls the trigger. bam. a loud, rapid
gunshot. The man's head pops back, then he falls to his knees, motionless. The car in front of the girl
moves forward. Her face moves closer and the girl notices the shiny front bumper. The girl screams:GIRL
Oh my God. m-my God.INT. HOSPITAL ROOM - NEXT DAY
The girl lays in a hospital bed, an iv tube hanging from her arm. In the corner of the room, a television set with an old set of cable is turned on. mister keffir, 50's, and a very large police man sits on a
large, white, leather couch. They are dressed in t-shirts and sweatpants. The large man leans forward, his back
to the girl, his right hand on the edge of the chair.
Through the small window in the opposite corner, we see the street. The police man exhales loudly and says:
POLICE MAN
That one hurt, huh?KEFFIR
That's right.
As the police man speaks, mister keffir lightly pats his large stomach. He says:
KEFFIR
Anything bad that happens to her, i take it pretty hard.
POLICE MAN
The important thing is to get her all patched up. That guy wasn't no mug. He was tryin' to kill her.
The girl whispers:
GIRL
v-v-vortex.
Keffir leans back and turns to see her. He shrugs.
He pats his jacket pockets and runs through a few objects. His expression darkens. He stands up. He turns and goes to the girl. He walks over and puts his hand on her shoulder and caresses it.
There is a long beat of silence, then, he says:
KEFFIR
i know, it was them. Its always them.
POLICE MAN
Them? Who's Them?
