"Nice shot rookie."

I nod my head at my new teammate in thanks. It's going to take me awhile to get used to different players and my new position. I can't help taking a few shots every now and then though.

"Go left, Ronan!" Coach shouts pacing up and down outside the rink. I focus and breathe in the frosty air, my ears tracking skates around me as my eyes watch each player. I catch Sloan lunging for the puck and smile in nostalgia.

He passes it to a guy named knuckle, weird name I know but he's bald and somehow the team thought knuckle was fitting. I watch as they work together until Sloan takes a shot and scores. Despite feeling happy I can't help but notice the ache in my chest.

That used to be me assisting Sloan.

Part of me thought it wasn't fair that I had to start from the bottom again. Was my injury not punishment enough? Yet I knew deep down that if I wanted to gain respect not only from others but also for myself I would have to know it was earned.

I also was a bit stiff of the ice after having not played for so long.

"Okay water break. Back in 5 guys." Quinn claps. I sigh taking off my helmet and shaking my head as I slowly skate towards the side. The others crowd each other a little way away around the water bottles but I move to my phone on the side instead.

I have had it up loud all day, just in case. After dropping Lucas off this morning I had made sure to give Dr Parker my number just in case he couldn't ever get ahold of Shelby. I had also been waiting for a text from Shelby and so far have heard nothing.

I don't know if it means it's gone so bad that she's freaking out so she can't message or it's gone so good that she hasn't needed to. I really wanted this to be it for her, I know how much she has been trying and I want her to do something for herself.

I check my notifications while leaning on the ice wall. It makes me think back to the first time Shelby touched me, the smile on my face widening at the thought. She shocked me but I loved it. Seeing nothing new my shoulders drop, something was just niggling at me today.

"Ronan, you alright man?" Sloan's voice calls, a hand being slapped onto my back as he pulls me into his side. I turn to face him and see Quinn watching me just behind Sloan.

"Yeah." I nod but their faces don't change. "I just - do you think I should ring to check on Lucas?"

Quinn shakes his head, "Shelby never does. He's been there before."
