Gwen sighed, her eyes squeezing shut as she tried to block it all out. She hated thunderstorms, the loud booms and the lightning. She flinched, stuffing her earphones into her ears and covering her head with her pillow.

No use.

She opened her eyes, she didn't have time for this. She had school tomorrow! Her first day of senior year and she did not want to show up looking like a sleep deprived zombie. She was going to a new school, one that was still in her district, but far enough away that she could start over. She needed to start over. Even if it was for the dumbest reason ever.

Junior year had been a roller coaster, she'd finally broken up with her seven year long boyfriend, Trent. It hadn't been an easy decision, but it was one she knew she had to make. Their relationship had started in the fifth grade, all fun and games and silliness, and they'd managed to survive through middle school and every awkward faze brought with it; never once having a problem too big for them to solve.

But after so long, Gwen knew it was time to pull the plug. They had become too comfortable, too used to always being with each other. It had gotten to the point where suddenly she realized, if they didn't break up in high school then they never would.

They would have gone through their senior year, applied to all the same colleges despite their vastly differing majors and not long after they would have gotten engaged, settled down and that would've been it.

Trent was a good guy, he'd made her happy and throughout their entire relationship, she'd always known she was loved.

Maybe to some that might sound like the dream, you meet someone, you fall in love and that's that. Peaceful, calm, easy, comfortable. If only she'd followed through with it, she would've had the perfect life, the perfect love story. But that just wasn't what she wanted.

She loved Trent, she always would. But she wanted something more.

BOOM!!!!

Gwen groaned, her hair becoming a tangled mess as she tossed and turned. Eventually she gave up, opening her bed side drawer to retrieve her phone when she found something lodged between the small table and the bed. She squinted at it, trying to make out what it was in the dark before reaching her hand into the crack and grabbing aimlessly for it.

She hit something with her nail, hearing the sound of metal scraping her floor board as she reached for it again, her hand clamping around something definitely metal, and cold. She pulled it up, her arm getting stuck a bit along the way causing her to lose her grip a bit, but she easily caught it, pulling it onto her bed and into her lap.

It was a flashlight.

She marveled at the device, her lips widening to a reminiscent smile as a memory triggered.

"Gwen?" Duncan called, she could hear him, but she didn't speak. She didn't want Duncan of all people to see her like this. She didn't need him anyway, she was five now! She was a big girl!

"Gwen stop being dumb!" he shouted at her, she could hear the sounds of doors clicking as he searched for her, but she didn't make a sound. "Gwen! This isn't fun anymore!"

Gwen frowned, it had started as a game of hide and seek, but then the lightening started and the lights went out, now she was stuck, sitting alone in the hallway closet as she tried not to cry.

"Gwen! If you don't come out! I'm gonna tell your mom!"

Gwen knew it was a lie, Duncan was a lot of things, a butthead being the biggest one, but he wasn't a tattle tell.

"Gweeen!" he shouted, "Alright that's it! You have to come out because I said so and you have to do what I say because I'm older!" he shouted grumpily, Duncan hated when people didn't play fair. It was one of those things that was only okay if Duncan did it.

Gwen sighed, hugging her knees closer to herself as she waited, it was only a matter of time before he found her.

Sure enough his footsteps drew closer and closer, pausing at the door of the closet before it opened revealing a six year old very annoyed Duncan.

"There you are!" he said, the flashlight in his hand pointed at her, causing her to squint against the harsh light.

"What are you-" he paused, his voice going softer as he noticed her tears, "Hey.." he said, kneeling down beside her.

"What's wrong?"

Gwen shook her head, meaning to tell him 'nothing' when a bolt of lightning flashed outside, followed by a loud boom of thunder that had her wincing.

Duncan looked at her curiously, "You're scared of the lightning?" he asked, snickering at her when she buried her face into her knees.

Duncan frowned at her, "Don't be scared Gwen." he told her, scooting in closer to her and wrapping a small arm around her shoulders, "It's stupid to be scared."

"Well maybe not all the time." he amended, "But right now is stupid."

Gwen sniffled, looking up at him through tear filled eyes, "Why is it stupid?" she asked him, watching as his signature Duncan smirk came onto his little face.

"Cause I'm right here, duh." he told her, his face going serious, "My dad says that lightning is cool." he said, "It looks cool."

Gwen shook her head, "No it doesn't." she told him, her voice wavering

"Does to." he argued, "It's super cool. Like me." he smirked again.

Gwen rolled her eys, laughing a little at Duncan's silliness. Duncan smiled, "Lightning isn't scary Gwen, it's super awesome wicked cool. Just like me!" he said, tickling Gwen a little to get her to smile.

"You're not scared of me are you?"

"No way!" Gwen told him, looking at him scandalized. Duncan nodded, "Alright then! So whenever lightning comes you don't have to be scared!"

"Just pretend it's me and my flashlight coming to look for you!"

Gwen smiled, after that night she'd made sure to keep the flashlight right next to her bed, in case of emergency. On the nights when the lightning would come she would sit awake in her bed, holding the flashlight close and think of Duncan.

She hadn't seen Duncan in years. Their moms had been practically inseparable but after Duncan's mom had passed away there was never any reason for the two of them to see each other.

Gwen layed down, wondering about her old friend and what he must look like now, who he was and how he'd changed. Slowly she felt herself inching toward sleep, her mind completely falling away with the one final thought.

She missed Duncan.
