Maria always felt she had to prove herself. Prove to her father that she was no dumb woman. She could feel his disdain for her when she was little. She believed Eladio blamed her for the death of her mother. Her mother tried for many years to have a child and the Don poured as much money as possible into these endeavors. When she was with child She was ecstatic, knowing this would probably be her only chance to have a child. Maybe she was not meant to be a mother, Maria's Abuelita would tell her when she asked about her mother."God did not want her to have a child and no amount of your fathers money could have changed fate." Abuela would relent. Maria's Abuela often tried to comfort her due to the rejection she felt from her father. "He shouldn't blame you Mari, men belief they can define God," Abuela said cradling the sobbing little girl, "They believe them to be Gods themselves," Abuela laughed to herself, "Little do they know, us women we are the Gods among men," She stated to her granddaughter.
Maria looked up, wiping the tears from her eyes, curious to her grandmother's words. Abuela continued, "We created life inside us, and we raise the men who rule the earth... your papa may not see it now but you are a strong girl and a force to be reckoned with. And that is because you are a woman, not despite it. Never forget that." Maria never forgot her grandmother's words of encouragement even after she passed and promised to show her father she had what it takes.
She stuck out like a sore thumb, surrounded by boys and men. She knew her father envied the Salamanca family that worked under him for their abundance of boys. The three sets of cousins never interested Maria much, the twins were the only Salamancas she saw frequently. They were not much older than her but she believed them to be far too immature for her time, spending the day fighting over their Tio's gun to see who could shoot the most beer cans. This is how she started an unlikely friendship with Juan, a real low-level man who worked security on the compound. He was about 20 and Maria found him to be very charming. He was very kind to her and was one of the only men who seemed to care about her. She ended up getting him assigned as her personal body guard and he would escort her on walks through the desert where he would teach her to shoot. She welcomed the attention and appreciated the guidance in becoming a fighter that she overlooked some of his behavior. Brushing off how every time when they went out to shoot he would nustle himself up behind her, guiding her hands around the gun, and bring his face so close to hers she could feel his breath on her cheek to instruct her where to aim. I confused Maria, why did he do this every time? It's not like she still needed his assistance; she hadn't missed a shot in months. She didn't know it then but she was being groomed by this man who was supposed to protect her. She tried to ignore the sinking feeling she got when he would get a little too friendly. But she couldn't ignore his actions the night before her 10th birthday when he woke her in her bed.
"What's happening?" Maria asked him.
"Happy birthday! It's midnight, I wanted to be the first to tell you." Juan said with an almost sinister smile on his face as he sat on the side of her bed.
This alarmed her, making Maria sit up in bed. "Ha ha... thanks." She said.
He inched closer to her, "I wanted to give you a special present..." He said, sliding his hand under the blanket.
Maria jumped away from him. "What are you doing!" She questioned.
"Cmon don play stupid I know you feel the same amor? Always trying to have me around you?" Juan stated like it was a fact leaving Maria in a stake of shock only to be brought out of this trance when he tried to plant a kiss on her causing her to slap him fiercely across his face.
"FUCK" He cursed.
"Get out!" She commanded as tears welled up in her eyes.
Juan laughed at her and leaned in once more to whisper, "You think you can tell me what to do little girl? Try to speak about this and no one would believe you."
Maria stood her ground, "My Father will have you killed."
He laughed again and responded, "the father that hates you? Doubt it."
He left the room quietly leaving Maria in bed, tears now running down her face. She curled up under the sheets quietly sobbing. She missed her Abuelita and how she would comfort her when she cried. And that's when she remembered her grandmother's words, "Men, they believe themselves to be Gods themselves." "You are a force to be reckoned with." Maria dried her tears and patiently waited for morning and for everyone to arrive.
She could hear the loud music playing outside and laughter booming over it. Peering out her window she saw the poolside full of family and associates. It was time. She picked out a new white dress and gathered a ribbon, surprisingly not for her hair. She used the ribbon to fashion a blade to the outside of her other leg and concealed her weapon with the end of her dress. Once outside she made her way around the pool greeting their guests. She finally spotted Juan standing on the outskirts of the party. She found a spot by the edge of the pool free of guests and felt his eyes on her. She could sense him approaching and once she smelled his cologne that made her want to gag she knew it was go time.
"How are you this morning?" He whispers to Maria.
She turned her head in his direction, too scared yet to look at his face, making note of the outline his gun made placed in a holster around his ankle. He wouldn't be able to get to it quick enough. He grabbed her wrist, making her blood run cold
"Did you hear me? I asked you a question." He said in a more demanding tone still in a hushed voice.
Maria finally got the courage to look him in the eye and when she did the rage overcame her. With one arm she grabbed hold of her blade and with the other she broke free of his hold on her wrist and dragged his arm, caught off guard he fell to his knees in front of her. The shriek of a woman caused Don Eladio to snap his head in the direction of his daughter that had everyone's attention. He watched as his 10 year old daughter held a large blade to the man's neck, announcing to the party, "maldito pedófilo." before slitting his throat and shoving his bleeding body into the crystal blue water below. Time stopped at the party, everyone standing in horror waiting for the Don's reaction. A smile crept up on Eladio's Face before he erupted in a gleeful laugh and clapped loudly breaking the tension. He ran over to his daughter, now whose white dress was splattered in blood, and hoisted her up on his shoulders and exclaimed,
"Mi Hija!!! Ella es una asesina!!" He shouted her praises for this permanently altering his perception of his little girl. She was strong and he commended her bravery and loved to bring it up...
"10 years old! Can you believe that!" Eladio exclaimed, "First kill at 10 not even the Salamancas could beat that."
His association went along with his hyperfixation on his daughter's savagery.
"Si, Si," Hector began, "Marco and Leonel were 11 with their first killed and there were two of them!"
As if Don Eladio's ego wasn't big enough, his daughter's rise to infamy within the cartel couldn't have made him anymore proud. By the Time Maria first met Lalo she had quite the name for herself...
