"He's gone Maria..." Don Eladio said.Maria stood, gripping the hot metal railing to the pool, swirling her toes in the cool water below. She was in a state of shock, unable to muster enough strength to move her vocal cords. So she stood silent, as her father watched.
"Mija?" He questioned, more concerned, "Did you hear me? Um... Eduardo, uh...he-"
The sun glimmered off the water, reflecting into Maria's unblinking eyes. She tightened her grip on the railing, believing that she may collapse any second. She sank one foot into the pool slowly followed by the other.
"It seems to have been an assassination..." Don Eladio finally explained.
How could this be? Maria's mind raced. She had seen him only yesterday. Finally having returned from America where he narrowly avoided incarceration. The longer she looked at the water she recalled their first encounter by this very pool. She recalled his face when he first looked at her. And his face when he looked at her yesterday after so much time apart. And the thought of how she would never see his face again. She wished the pool would turn into the ocean, sweeping her soulless body out to sea to join him in death.
She hadn't realized but she was now knee deep in the pool. The Don still standing by the edge trying to get a response from her. Tears streaming down her expressionless face. Her fingers glided on the water before they finally submerged along with the rest of her body. Maria could hear her father call out for the staff to help her but it didn't register, she was in a different dimension. Her mind transported years back to when she was 20, seducing her poor murdered husband in this very pool. Then she was 10 years old looking down at the bleeding corpse of the man she had just killed. She envied him. Wishing death would envelop her as she sank to the bottom of the pool. But she remembered how good it felt to kill him. Revenge. That was her thought before she was pulled out and quickly dried off by staff. She finally spoke. "Who is responsible for this?" She asked the Don in a shaky voice.
Her father responded, "Everyone on his compound was killed except an Ignacio Varga, who is nowhere to be found."
Nacho. She placed him immediately. Lalo was so excited to introduce his new friend, whom he had spent most of his time in America with.
"Aye! Nacho!" Lalo said, calling him over to where he was seated, Maria comfortably on his lap- drink in hand. "I want you to meet my wife, Maria," Lalo said proudly. He loved calling her his wife. Even after a couple years of marriage she could still hear the giddiness in his voice when he said it. She was his.
"Nice to finally meet the woman I've heard so much about." Nacho said, smiling at the couple.
There was a slight awkwardness to him Maria sensed. And his eyes added to that awkwardness, he didn't really want to make eye contact with her. Was it guilt? She then recalled the most chilling detail of all that she had forgotten in the chaos.
Later in the evening as the events had died down and her father was preparing to leave she saw Nacho sitting nervously at the edge of the party. She went and took a seat next to him. Throughout the evening the two had been exchanging glances. Maria always knew when she was being stared at, and when she met his gaze she was always met with the most sad eyes. He looked sorry for her. She thought maybe he had something to tell her. Maybe about America that Lalo didn't want to tell her. They had some small talk before he asked her if she had been staying with her father while Lalo had been away.
"Yeah I don't like being in this big house alone. It's kinda creepy." She laughed and looked up at Nacho, who smiled for a second before it quickly faded, trying to mask his emotions by taking a sip of his drink.
"So you all moved back in?" He questioned.
"Oh no, I don't think I'll even stay here tonight." Maria admitted watching what she now realized was a look of relief wash over Nacho. "I mean 7 million for bail?" She laughed, "I had no idea that when I gave those men the money that he'd be home in a couple days. How'd you pull that one off." She joked.
Nacho chuckled quietly, "I knew a good lawyer."
Maria laughed, "The American legal system for ya eh!"
Why did he look so relieved to find out she wouldn't be staying there? He had compassion for her life but not Lalos? Why? Why her? Why couldn't he have let them share a fate? How could he do this? How could he betray his own friend? His cartel? An endless stream of whys poured into Maria's head as she sat wrapped in a towel sitting by the pool. The staff prepared her a car while her father tried to convince her to stay there.
The only thought that wasn't an unanswerable question was her last image of Lalo. She was practically torturing herself, constantly replaying it in her mind. Adding it as a log on the pile fueling her internal fire of revenge.
"You're not staying Mari?" Lalo asked, wrapping his arms tightly around her waist, holding her close.
"No I wish but I got everything at Papa's house," She said disappointed, "But I promise I'll get everything ready and come over bright and early and we'll have lots of fun, okay?" Maria said, running her fingers along the buttons of his shirt.
"Mmm," Lalo responded with a lustful look in his eyes, "I like that." He said, running his hand up her back.
Wrapping her arms around his neck she pulled him in for a kiss. Their final kiss. His smell overtaking her, and the taste of his drink entered her mouth as her lips layered over his.
"Adios Mija!" He said as she got into the car, using both his hands to blow her a kiss. He waved her off, getting smaller and smaller in the mirror until she could no longer see him and was surrounded by the darkness of the Mexican desert.
