Slipping through the cracks to a parallel universe isn't as hard as one might think. Most beings that inhabit this reality are completely unaware of the true extent of their power. They say there's hundreds of them, realities that is...each decision you've ever made leads to another and leaves the previous one behind storing it in your own personal filing cabinet you flip through when you wish to reminisce about what could have been...
As Senator Nancy Pelosi drove through an empty street in the dead of the night, she couldn't help but imagine a reality where she had heard just one "yes"
Just two hours ago she was happy. Campaigning was going swimmingly and after work she was to go to the doctor to get an ultrasound to finally know the gender of her baby. Her and her current boyfriend Saul Goodman had been trying for what seemed to be forever to get pregnant. they did every remedy and green juice, planned around her ovulation times and spoke to countless doctors. Nothing. Nancy was so ready to give up, to cut her losses and look into other options for raising a child. Until she finally got a positive test back. It was a miracle above all else and the couple was thrilled.
an hour ago she walked into the doctors office. She could still recall the grey eyes of the receptionist who checked her in before she took a seat in a waiting room chair with a deflated cushion. Pulsing her leg in anticipation, she looked at the clock.
10:43pm.
She watched the red hand
Seconds turned into minutes
Tick
Tick
Tick
Tick
Tick
A cold chill fluttered down her spine and she felt her fingers go numb. There was a looming voice that sounded like it was coming from right in front of her but it was impossible to make out any word due to a sudden ringing in both of her ears.
It got louder
and louder
and louder
"Nancy"
"Nancy."
"Nancy hello?"
She shook herself awake at the sound of her name letting her eyes slowly adjust to a figure sitting at a desk. She focused her gaze down at the name printed on a metal plate reading it to herself over and over.
"Doctor Louis"
"Yes?" He responded sounding impatient.
She was sitting in an office. The walls were a kind of Kelly green. The man before her was in a navy blue suit with a cool grey tie.
"M-my baby- I'm supposed to be at an appointment for my baby!"
In a panic, Nancy shot out of the chair she sat in.
"Ma'am please sit back down." Louis softy  spoke motioning to her seat.
"My baby!" She was nearly shouting at this point.
"Nancy, like I've said twice, you had a miscarriage. Your baby is gone."
"No..."
Her eyes started to sting. She walked out of the room and down the yellow lit halls with a blank stare, stopping for no one in her path. There were no thoughts in her mind when she got in her car, no destination. She was sinking within herself. Slipping away into an alternate universe. She started driving.
Ring ring ring
She picked up her phone that was resting in the passenger seat. It was from Saul.
"Hello-"
"Hello gorgeous!" She heard him say on the other line. She gulped.
"I really hope I'm not interrupting the appointment, but I want to be the first one to know, unless of course you want to do a cake thing for our gender reveal and you don't even know yet and I mean that's fine but..."
Nancy pulled the phone a few inches away from her ear while Saul blabbered on. He sounded so happy, it made her angry for a moment, but only a moment. This was the same happiness she had felt just a few hours ago, the same feeling of blissful ignorance that she so desperately wished to go back to. She couldn't bare to be the one to take that away from him.
"It's a girl." Her voice shook.
"A girl!? Oh my word Nancy she's going to be so beautiful! I bet she'll have your eyes and hair, but of course she'll have my nose because first born daughters always have their fathers noses."
Hot tears streamed down her face as light sobs escaped her lips. Lying to him was worse. It was against her better judgement, but he would hate her if he knew that she was this incapable of bearing a child.
She hung up the phone and threw it out the window, the sound if it hitting the gravel was followed by a small shriek. Nancy jumped, and without a second thought, pulled over onto the side of the road.
The noise got increasingly louder the closer she got. She inched closer and closer to the source which appeared to be coming from under a piece of cloth. She slowly lifted the cover and revealed two small children wrapped in blankets. One elephant, one monkey. They were siblings, there was no doubt about that, but they were completely different species. Nancy had never whitenesses such a phenomenon before. She picked up the little monkey and looked into it's big black eyes. A singular tuft of hair poked out of the little baby's head.
"Well aren't you just adorable!" She giggled wiping the remnants of tears out of her eyes. The monkey smiled back a gummy smile as the little elephant to her right let out a whine. Nancy went over to the elephant not even attempting to pick it up. She placed a hand on its head and pet it softly.
"You're both very cute, who in the world would leave two children on the side of the road like this?" She said to herself.
"You don't belong to anyone...do you?" She asked the monkey who shook its head in response.
"I wonder if I could take you as my own?" She thought looking into those black doe eyes once again.
"Of course I can't take both of you, if anything I'll probably take the monkey. There is no way I can take care of you."
The elephant looked at the ground in shame, it seemed ridicules for it to understand what she was saying, but somehow...it did.
"Oh please don't give me that look, I've had a rough day too. You have to understand. Hey! I know, there's a lovely jungle just north of here. The jungle of Nool, near the river walloo. I can take you there! Surely someone there can take care of you, maybe even one of your own kind! What do you say big guy?"
Of course the elephant said nothing but he didn't seem to protest when Nancy brought him to the jungles edge.
"Go on, just in there." She said giving him a light push. The vegetation of the jungle looked thick and seemingly endless. The young elephant cowered in fear for a long time before walking forward through gritted teeth.
Nancy felt awful abandoning a child like that, but she knew he would likely be far happier in here.
(We are gonna ignore that elephants do not live in the jungle lmao)

                    (This is Wattpad after all)

Eighteen years had passed since that incident and Nancy was back on her feet again. More or less. You see, after she endured weeks of lying to her boyfriend about being pregnant, she finally came clean. He didn't take it well and broke up with her immediately. Since then she stepped down from being senator and settled down with another man named curios George to try again at a family. This resulted in an immediate success! She had two other twin monkeys with him and she named them wickersham 2 and wickersham 3. She decided to also name the monkey she adopted from the side of the road so many years ago wickersham 1.
While the siblings were growing up, they had no idea they weren't related by blood. Quite frankly, Nancy had no intention of breaking the news to them, that is until she fell ill and was on her death bed with Leukemia. The family at this point was broke and living on the streets, they didn't have insurance so the sickness hit hard and the hospital bills hit harder. Wickersham 3 tried working as a tax collector for a side hustle, but it wasn't particularly sustaining a family of five. The three monkeys knew they had to start a life for themselves elsewhere. They found a woman who called herself "the sour kangaroo" and got jobs bounty hunting for her. She lived in the jungle of Nool, and working for her meant living there too. It was quite far from the city where they grew up, and they hated to leave their mother like this, but they had to. Right as they said what they assumed to be their final goodbyes to the woman who raised them to be the monkeys they are today, Nancy pulled wickershams 2 and 3 aside. This was when she finally told them. They were shocked, and hurt that she had kept this news from them for so long. By telling them while she was in the state, she was putting them in an odd place. They couldn't be mad at her, she was dying!
They both agreed it would be best to keep the secret from wickersham 1 no matter how  much they didn't want to.

To make matters worse, their first bounty was Horton the elephant, or wickersham 1's biological brother.
Nothing hurt them more than to tell wickersham 1 the news. But after they found out how mental Horton was, they couldn't force themselves to hide it any longer.
Of course there was resentment for a while. It's a lot for a monkey to find out so suddenly that everything you once thought to be true is a lie. However, after some time, they realized nothing really changed, they were still the same trio they had always been.

Our story begins after the events of Horton hears a who. Everyone is happy, The Who's and the citizens of the jungle are living in peace and harmony...for now.
