"I've always thought that if I keep reaching up to their expectations, they might finally stop looking at me like I am a mistake. But looking at you, I've finally found out that I am fine the way I am and I appreciate that.."
-U-1048, the prodigal tactician
"Senpai is always so reserved and we barely get to see her smile like that. Thank you for that, Sekkekkyu-san.."
-U-1146, the empathetic soldier
"You may not notice it, but senpai smiles even more often with you around. I feared she would isolate herself from all of us again, but you've helped her get rid of her fear. Thank you so much!"
-U-4989, the curious accomplice
-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_
"Look at her, she's so weird. She can't even smile.." One of her fellow female myelocytes stated, talking shit about U-1048.
"Look at those creepy dull eyes!"
"But we can't deny that she's a genius.."
"Yeah but who would like to work with that type of person?"
"She's a genius but way too bossy and mean.."
"It would've been better if she were a boy, you know? She acts like one, so why can't she be one?"
"Why did the professors even bother to put up with her? She may be terrifyingly intelligent for her age but she acts so mighty just because she's favored!"
"She thinks she's so better than us!"
"Such a teacher's pet.."
"Look! Here she comes!"
U-1048 walked towards them with a threatening aura surrounding her.
A chill ran down their membranes making them frozen in fear.
Superiority and authority, her aura stated.
"Next time, do not disrespect people of higher standing than you, alright?" She told them, giving them one last glance.
She stared at them, as if memorizing their codes, before looking forward and walking away.
Her silhouette still made them feel scared.
"She's so scary!!"
Ah, it was another normal day inside the neutrophil's ward, more specifically, the girl's ward.
U-1048 got used to her peers talking bad behind her back. It was normal and she didn't care about them either.
U-1048 was incredibly talented as a myelocyte, praised for her remarkable intelligence and knowledge about combat, she was one of the most favored amongst her kind.
But that created many enemies for her, her fellow female myelocytes whom she grew up with despised her very core.
They loathed how she was favored by the professors.
They only try to get along with her when they need her to do something for them.
They despised her for being better than them. They hated her very existence.
They started making false rumors about her, making her image to strangers only as of a stern, cold, and unempathetic teacher's pet who doesn't like other cells.
Because of that, no one wanted to be friends with her, leaving her lonely for the rest of her childhood.
They also tried to get a reaction from her, calling her names and even bullying her in front of her entire class but she persisted.
Which is why she put up a mask, reached up to their false accusations, becoming what they wanted her to be just to make them stop the bullying.
She eventually got a higher rank in the class and they stopped, but they often talked behind her back.
They do not understand her, they never will, they only care about themselves and their reputations.
-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-U-1048 was reading a book under an apple tree in the school grounds.
Her female classmates were avoiding her as usual, some snickering as she walked past.
Suddenly, a girl with red hair wearing a red erythroblast uniform walked towards her, seemingly timid in her eyes. She had a patched up cheek, seemingly due to some minor scratches.
Everyone looked at their direction, seemingly surprised that a erythroblast was about to interact with a myelocyte. Especially someone like U-1048.
She brightly smiled at the myelocyte not minding at all the stares of the crowd.
"Thank you for saving me yesterday, Hakkekkyu-senpai.." She uttered, making U-1048 halt her reading.
U-1048, raised an eyebrow, before squinting her eyes.
Her onyx eyes widened in realization.
She was the erythroblast that she aided yesterday. That one that was attacked by a pseudomonas and the one that was protected by her kouhai.
"And you are?" U-1048 asked, looking at her with a blank stare.
"I-I am AE-3803.." She replied.
She fidgeted with her fingers, looking away.
"I wanted to ask you for your name but you immediately left.."
U-1048 looked at her in surprise, shocked that someone would care to even thank her.
This was new.
She looks hesitantly at the erythroblast, bowing her head respectfully.
"I am 1048..." U-1048 uttered.
The erythroblast's eyes shone as she smiled.
"Let's be friends from now on, okay?"
Something told her, this one encounter was about to affect her entire life.
