3rd person POV:

Two days later, Natasha was training in the main room as Steve walked in, grasping a piece of paper. His bottom lip quivered as he walked up to Nat and pulled her into a hug.

'She's gone Tasha; no one could have survived that. Bucky checked the area out, everything got destroyed, there's a huge crater where she was standing.'

'No. She's alive, I- Steve she can't have. I can't have let her...'

'Nat it wasn't your fault. If she wanted to, she could have left sooner, but she stayed. Y/n saved the city, she died to save a helpless family. You can't blame yourself for her sacrifice.'

'She was worth more than everyone, everything... it shouldn't h-have been y/n. Y/n was mine, I would destroy everything for her...'

'I know Nat, I know.' Steve held Natasha as she sobbed into his shoulder.

'I would die for her, Steve.' Natasha rasped.

'Nat, you have to live for her.'

Natasha choked down a sob and ran past Steve up the stairs to her room, slamming the door behind her.

Everyone suffered y/n's loss, but Natasha was struggling the most.

Tony and Fury agreed the Avengers would lay low, and take time away from the public for a few months, to give them some time to readjust and to come to terms as much as possible with y/n's death.

None of them however, truly got over it. The few months became six months, and the six months became a year.

The Avengers still trained, and went on missions, but undercover, without anyone's knowledge.

One day, in June, about a year after y/n was killed, Tony walked into Nat's room.

She was standing at the window, gazing out at the city in the distance.

She was still hurting because her girl died, and hadn't been on a job in ages.

'Natasha.' Nat turned around slowly, clutching your shirt across her chest. Tony watched her cautiously, and walked up to her.

'We need you. We've already lost y/n... please Natasha we need you back.'

Tony came closer, and tried to hold Natasha's arm.

'No.'

'Natasha please, you're a fighter, you cannot give up just because you've lost someone'-

'She wasn't just someone, she was y/n y/l/n.'

Tony sighed, removing his hand. 'There's a new assassin, Natasha. They are known to us as the WindBreaker. They're becoming a threat to the city. We need YOU.' Tony pleaded.

'Why would I?'

'Y/n died protecting the city, was her sacrifice for nothing?'

'Don't speak of her. I will hunt down the assassin, and kill them.' Natasha spat, leaving the room.

Tony followed her to the main room, where everyone looked up in surprise.

'Tasha!!' Clint called, running over.
'Did she agree to take the mission?' Clint asked, turning towards Tony.

'Yeah, she'll go tomorrow.'

Nat forced a smile, and brushed past Clint to go and get dinner.

'She's still hurting, Clint. I think that this mission will do her good.' Tony spoke quietly, almost whispering in Barton's ear.

'I know. Is she fit to go?' He asked.

'She's Black Widow. Of course she is.'
Tony smiled sadly, seeing Nat make her way back upstairs.

The next morning, Nat left early, following the GPS to where the assassin was supposed to be.

It felt weird for her to be doing a job after so long, and when she got off her motorbike, she had a new spring in her step, disguising the heavy feeling in her heart.

As she walked through the city, Nat saw a slender figure leaping between the rooftops, holding a gun.

'Found them.' She called out.

'Good, be careful Nat.' Tony spoke into her earpiece.

Natasha got onto the rooftop by climbing up the wall, and peered over the edge. She knew she could take the assassin, but before she ran out of her cover, she decided to watch for a while.

She saw another figure make their way onto the rooftop, and watched intently as the Windbreaker leapt up, and wrapped their legs around the other persons neck.
The assassin then flipped them easily and crushed their airway.

A shiver went down Nat's spine. Some sort of deja vu was running through her mind, and she was worried.
How the fuck would she know this assassin, why were they so familiar... she was sure she had never befriended any killers...

'Tony?' She murmured.

'You alright down there?' Tony asked.

'Im fine. Who is the Windbreaker? Tell me, fast.'

'No one knows. They seem to have been seen around the city for the past eight months or so, they only just started being an issue though.' Tony replied.

'Okay.' Nat watched as the Windbreaker threw the body to the side, and walked serenely to the edge of the building, peering over.

They had a female silhouette, and they were wearing an all black suit, with a mask completely coving their face.

Nat crept up behind them, readying her weapon. But as she did so, a feeling of unease swept over her, and she stopped.

'Stark, I can't do this.'

'Why the hell not Natasha?'

'The.. the assassin is familiar. I don't know how. I can't kill them. I'm trying, but my legs won't move forwards.' Natasha whispered into the coms.

'Well either kill them or get out of there, Nat.' Tony said, slightly concerned.

'Fuck this.' Nat muttered.

'On your knees.' She called out, pointing her gun and the startled assassin.

The Windbreaker spun round.

'It's been too long since you talked dirty to me like that.' They said, and dropped to their knees.
