Debby passed in 2018. If you're lucky enough to reach 50 and beyond, these are the years when your friend list will begin to shrink, little by little. As one of those 'friends who become family', she is thought about and missed every day.
For Debby Longenbaugh
There are many amazing qualities she had,
But most of all, she was fierce –
Fierce about her work, her friends, her family.
Fierce for her students and for
The causes she believed in – and the spelling
Of her name – with a 'y', never an 'ie'!
She was also immeasurably kind, volunteering
Her time and her warmth and her cooking,
Her wisdom and humor and helping hands
To those in need of support or comfort or
Perhaps a gentle (or swift) kick in the butt.
She loved green and growing things, jazz,
Mystery novels and traveling. I would have
Liked to have met Marcus, the love of her life.
After decades of cohabitating with felines
She was perhaps, by some unknown osmosis,
Part cat, enjoying a cozy sofa and watching
Turner Classic Movies with her pride, with
Peace and purring on all sides, surrounded by
Warm fuzzies and love, which is most likely
Where she finds herself now. I feel her presence,
Cat-like on the edge of my vision, as I type
This elegy, slipping away into eternity,
Wearing a period dress and an elegant hat,
The ghosts of her late kitties chasing after.
