"Are you offering?" Avery asked. Her brown eyes glinted with mischief.
"Maybe." They may have just met, but the Cooper girl could tell that Harper was going to change her world.
"What's in it for you?"
"You get to make Romeo over there jealous with a capital J and I get to make out with a pretty girl. Simple." For some reason, hearing Harper call her pretty gave her the same butterflies she'd felt when Jeremiah complimented her. Avery knew she was attracted to women, but it had never felt anything like this. She had never met someone so confident in what they wanted, and it was one of the most attractive things about the girl.
"Fuck it, I'm in."
Another song came on and the two girls started to dance together, gathering the attention of some people around them. Avery made eye contact with Jeremiah- who was looking at her with an indescribable emotion in his eyes- and winked. Two can play at this game, she thought. Looking back at Harper, the message was clear.
"You're sure?" Harper asked.
"Positive." And with that, Harper pulled Avery in for a long kiss. "Want to go somewhere a little more private?"
"Absolutely."
The two girls left the center of the party to go sit by the water. They made out a bit, talking in between small kisses. And for a little while, Avery forgot all about Jeremiah and the almost-kiss they shared. All she could see was Harper.
"I've only ever dated guys," Avery admitted, "but I've never had much luck."
"With Heart Eyes? Or were there others?"
"If you mean Jeremiah, then yes, with him. But there was also Tyler for a time."
"Ew, Tyler is such a fuckboy name," Harper said, making them both laugh.
"You're not wrong. I caught him cheating on me after our two year anniversary." Avery hadn't talked to anyone other than Conrad about what happened with Tyler. "He went to a different school than I did, so the fallout wasn't too bad. I really only went out with him because everyone expected us to get together and I was tired of waiting for Jeremiah. Honestly, I think the worst part was that I lost a lot of the friends I made through him."
"They probably suck anyway if they're friends with a douche like that."
Maybe it was the booze talking, but Avery couldn't wipe the smile from her face. "I think you're my new favorite hype-person."
"I'll gladly take the position, as long as I get paid." In response, Avery leaned over and kissed the girl deeply.
"That payment enough?"
"Might need a little more." The two made out for a little longer before they heard a commotion over by the fire. Someone had fallen down, and Avery became concerned when she made out Belly's figure in the distance.
"Shit, I think that's Belly," Avery said, standing up suddenly. "She's a family friend, I want to make sure she's okay."
"Want me to come?" The best part about the question was that it wasn't loaded with anything other than genuine concern for Avery's friend.
