THE ENTRANCE HALL WAS ABLAZE with torches and echoing footsteps as the students crossed the flagged stone floor for the double doors to the right, leading to the Great Hall and the start-of-term feast.
Four long house tables in the Great Hall had been filled up under the starless black ceiling, which was just like the sky they could glimpse through the high windows. Candles floated midair all along the tables, illuminating the silvery ghosts who were dotted around the Hall and the faces of students talking eagerly, exchanging summer news and shouting greetings at friends from other houses.
Finn walked through the Great Hall, Mattheo silently walking beside her, his jaws clenched and Seb and Theo were arguing behind them. Draco had been dragged away to the Slytherin table to take a seat next to Crabbe and Goyle.
As she and Mattheo walked in between the long tables, she noticed people staring at them, putting their heads together and whispering. Now, this wasn't anything new for Finn nor Mattheo. She knew what some people said about her behind her back; not everyone was thrilled with her body count. As always, she just dismissed the gossip as jealousy, which it often was and held her head up high. The gossip about Mattheo however, was out of fear, and she knew it.
It had always been about fear, from day one she had heard people whisper to and around her about the son of the Dark Lord. Of course, it had died down a little when students had gotten used to him strolling the halls, but she could've expected the news of Voldemort being back, to start those whispers back up again.
She looked at Mattheo, who stared forward and visibly ground his jaw. His shoulders tensed and he dug his nails into the palms of his hands.
Finn reached for his wrist and slowly let her fingertips brush against his skin. He opened his fist and she slid her hand into his. Immediately, she saw his jaws unclench and he shot a quick look at their entwined hands, before he looked up at her with a confused face. She shot him a small smile and he returned with an appreciative nod.
The moment they reached the Slytherin table, Pansy loudly placed her hands on the table as she stood up and shot Mattheo and Finn a death glare, before storming off to Daphne and Millicent.
"Since when is she shooting me daggers?" Mattheo asked as he sat down next to Finn.
"Don't take it too personally, she's been doing it to me for years now, and it hasn't drastically changed my life." Finn shrugged.
Mattheo chuckled. "Seems as if I just joined the elite then."
Finn smiled at him, before she let her eyes wander through the room, studying the Great Hall; it was the usual stuff.
They first landed on the Gryffindor table, catching the twins talking animatedly to an unsuspecting second-year. She figured they were trying to sell one of their new products to the poor kid and wondered which it was. Probably something painful, seen the kid's face went paler and paler. A small grin formed on her face just by thinking of things the twins could have been telling him about. Fred must've felt her staring at him and looked up from his explanation. He smirked and sent her a quick wink. Her grin widened and she held eye contact with him for a little, before exploring the Great Hall further.
