Immortal Technique
Chapter One
Jo was glad it was the last lesson of the day. Her boredom threshold has been pushed to the limit and she was one yawn away from drooling on her desk. Mr Brooke's reedy voice was becoming increasingly unbearable each passing moment. Jo glanced at the clock again getting impatient to find only one minute passed since the last time she looked at it.
"Miss Hubert, I'd like it if my students paid attention," Mr Brooke said curtly.
Jo smiled tightly, "Right, I'm sorry,"
The teacher glared at for a few more seconds before he turned back to the board to write dates. Jo rolled her eyes at his back and pretended to want to throw her pencil at it. Unfortunately, Mr Brooke turned back to the class at the same.
"I'm just wondering, Miss Hubert, if you find my detentions pleasing,"
Jo sat up straight. "No, sir. Your detentions are down right unpleasant...sir,"
"Good because you have one for the rest of the week," Mr Brooke said with a look of satisfaction. "Now tell the class what we've been learning all period,"
He got her. Jo had not heard one word he said.
"We've been learning about..." she trailed looking at Thelma for help. Thelma began moving her lips quickly. Jo raised an eyebrow at her.
"As I expected, Miss Hubert. I want an essay no less than 10,000 words on the lesson today by Friday,"
As soon as he said those words, the bell rang. Someone snickered. Jo remained behind while everyone filed out of the classroom to receive the detention slip.
"You have ten minutes," Mr Brooke said. Jo resisted the urge to show him her favourite finger. She left the classroom in a hurry and headed towards her locker. Standing beside it was Michael and her three best friends. Cole was the first to speak.
"I'm a little confused," he said, "Why did you get detention today of all days?"
Before Jo could answer, Sarah said, "Because she's an idiot,"
Jo opened her locker and dumped all her books in.
"You know, Sarah, lately our friendship had been all about verbal abuse and condescension but that's mainly on your part,"
Sarah caught an Algebra book that fell out of Jo's locker.
"Our friendship has always been about verbal abuse and condescension," Sarah said. "You make it that easy,"
"Give her a break," Thelma defended her. "Jo was being...Jo,"
Jo looked at Michael. " Not going to comment?"
He shrugged and adjusted his bag.
"I'm not sure its safe to since we are in the beginning of our relationship. I might mess up,"
"This is why I like you," Jo told him patting his cheek. Michael playfully swatted her hand away. Jo could not help looking at him. He was tall with thick auburn hair, bewitching green eyes, a gracian nose and full lips. As far as good looks go, Jo felt she hit the jackpot. His personality was an added bonus.
"Wipe that dreamy look off your face before you start drooling,"
"Sarah, go away," Jo said closing the locker before the rest of her books fell. She was blushing which made Michael grin even more. Cole began moving backwards.
"We have to go guys. Some of us have a bonfire party to organise," Cole said. "Thanks for getting detention by the way,"
"Oh c'mon, Cole. You think I wanted out?" Jo asked annoyed. "My stupidity and Mr Brooke are not the best detention-free combination,"
