Lyra's POV:
"So her parents are already gone?"
"Yes, unfortunately they died in the crash."
"Right. Any relatives?"
"No just her now."
"So we'll take her back home to claim some of her personal items and then take her to the orphanage." I opened my eyes to see a nurse talking to the police.
"Oh she's awake already," the nurse said before walking to my bed side, "can I get you something sweetheart? Are you hungry?" I shook my head.
"My parents and I were on our way home from dinner when we crashed."
"Alright, do you feel ok? These nice people want to speak with you." I nodded and the nurse left, the police man and woman walked over to where she was afterwards.
"Do you think you could talk to us about what happened tonight?" The man started, I nodded and he continued, "So what happened tonight? Do you know why you crashed?" I thought about it. I hadn't really been paying attention.
"I don't know," I answered honestly I just remembered driving then suddenly we swerved off the road, my mom seemed suddenly surprised after a sharp turn so maybe there was something in the road?" He nodded seriously.
"Do you have any other ideas?" I shook my head, "Then tomorrow we'll take you to the orphanage." I looked down at myself, I seemed ok aside from some stitches in my arm and an all over sore feeling.
"You should be fine to go tomorrow morning," the woman added, "we'll be taking care of you until your paperwork is filed for the orphanage, I'm Daniela and this is my partner Maxwell." She gestured to the man beside her and I nodded.
"Silent type?" Maxwell asked.
"I'm just tired." He smiled at me.
"Then we'll let you rest." He and Daniela walked towards the door.
"Goodnight Lyra we'll see you tomorrow morning," Daniela added before leaving. I felt exhausted but I doubted I'd be able to sleep, being in a new place was weird. I felt like someone was watching me.
**********
"It, it has to be here!" I exclaimed while I sorted through my mom's jewellery box.
"I'm sorry Lyra, but we'll be late if we don't head off to the orphanage soon," Daniela tried to calm me to no avail.
"NO!" I snapped, "I won't leave without it!"
"What are you looking for anyway?" Maxwell asked combing through the jewelry I'd scattered on my mom's dresser.
"My mom's silver locket," I replied sadly, "It had pictures of all three of us and it was a family heirloom."
"Was your mom wearing it when you crashed?" Maxwell asked in the quizzical tone he used when asking about a case.
"I don't know," I answered, "I wouldn't be surprised, she usually wore it." Daniela grimaced.
"Then it might be long gone, your mother is in the morgue now, she was probably undressed and her clothes were thrown away, even if she was still wearing it you can't steal from a corpse," Daniela spoke not looking at me.
"S-So I've lost all traces of my family?" I felt my eyes start to sting as tears streamed down my face.
"Not everything! You can take anything you want in the whole house, there's got to be something else that will remind you if your family.
